Q: I'm a senior citizen, and my trash-hauling bill is going up again. Is there someplace I can take my bagged trash instead of having it picked up?

A: Not in Summit County. The county no longer has landfills, and transfer stations here don't accept trash from individuals, the Summit/Akron Solid Waste Management Authority said.
However, you might be able to reduce your trash-hauling cost. Andrew Booker, environmental supervisor with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency's Division of Solid & Infectious Waste Management, recommended you do some comparison shopping among the companies licensed to haul trash in Stow. You can find them listed in the Service Department section of the city's Web site, http://www.stow.oh.us, or call the department at 330-689-2829 to get the companies' contact information. Ask the companies whether they offer lower rates for smaller volumes of trash.
Or consider combining your trash with that of a close-by neighbor and splitting the cost, both EPA spokesman Mike Settles and Stow Service Director Dano Koehler suggested. Koehler said as many as three people might be able to share a container, if none of them produces a great deal of trash.
