POSTED: 07:30 a.m. EST, Jan 07, 2009
It's time once again for area Scots to take a moment to recall their favorite son, poet laureate Robert Burns.
Jan. 25 is Burns' 250th birthday.
The Celtic Club and the Canton Akron Scottish Heritage Association are holding their 12th annual Burns Night Dinner from 6 to 11:30 p.m. Jan. 17.
The dinner will be at Anthe's at the Lakes, 4315 Manchester Road, New Franklin, and will include the band the Mickeys, Highland Dancers from Studio 723 in Bay Village, a pipe band, poet Merle Mollenkopf and harpist Dreama Powell. The evening will include Burns' Address to a Haggis, the Immortal Memory, shortbread and door prizes. Tickets are $33 for adults and $9 for children 11 or younger.
For reservations or information, call 330-867-0485 in the Akron area or 330-343-2984 in the Canton area or e-mail mnoetling@yahoo.com.
Iris Restaurant in Canton also will honor Burns, with a dinner beginning at 6 p.m. Jan. 22.
Iris owner Angus McIntosh will read the Address to a Haggis, which will begin a meal that includes a crock of leekie soup, orange and red onion salad, roasted rack of lamb with mint sauce, roasted fall vegetables, trifle, coffee and shortbread.
The dinner is $45. Call 330-313-1519 for reservations. Iris is at 228 Fourth St. NW, Canton.
Wearing of kilts and kilted skirts is encouraged.
Chili challenge time
Lock 3 Park in downtown Akron is the place to be this weekend if you're hungry for a bowl of chili.
The third annual Akron Firefighters' Chili Challenge to benefit the Akron Children's Hospital Burn Unit is Friday, while a new event, the Restaurant Chili Challenge, also to benefit the burn unit, takes place on Saturday.
Competing along with Akron firefighters from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday are the Akron Police Department, City of Akron Communications Department, City of Akron Engineering Bureau and the law firms Brouse McDowell and Roetzel & Andress.
Six restaurants are taking part in their challenge from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday: Aladdin's Eatery, the Barley House, Hackers, Ido Bar & Grill, Ivan's Deli and the Ohio Brewing Co.
At either challenge, guests can receive a sample of each team's chili for a $5 donation to the burn unit. Bowls of chili are available for $3.
Lock 3 Park is at 200 S. Main St., downtown Akron.
Affordable tasting
If you are looking for a bargain — and who isn't these days? — check out the monthly wine tastings at Vaccaro's Trattoria.
For $20, the tastings include 10 wines plus food samples. Wines are available for purchase at state retail minimum, with a 10 percent discount offered for all case purchases.
The tastings are on the second Monday of each month beginning at 5:30 p.m. The next tasting is Monday. Call 330-666-6158 for a reservation. Vaccaro's is at 1000 Ghent Road, Bath Township.
New brewery rankings
Congratulations to Fred Karm, owner of Akron's Hoppin' Frog Brewing Co., for being named to Ratebeer.com's list of top 100 breweries in the world.
Hoppin' Frog ranked No. 74 on the list, which included just three Ohio breweries. Also making the list were Cleveland's Great Lakes Brewing Co. at No. 20 and Barleys Brewing Co. in Columbus at No. 53.
Hoppin' Frog is at 1680 E. Waterloo Road.
New at Vue
The Vue Restaurant in Hudson has a new general manager. Shawn Tatarowicz replaces Mike Tomaselli, who was general manager and all-around wine guy for four years.
Tatarowicz has been general manager of Three Birds Restaurant in Lakewood for the past three years.
Tomaselli left the Vue to take a position with the Grotto Wine Bar, 13101 Shaker Square in Cleveland, which opened on New Year's Eve.
The Vue is at 49 Village Way in Hudson.
