School news
• A Green High art student took first place in the billboard-design contest sponsored by the Summit-Akron Solid Waste Management Authority. Amanda Rosen's design will appear on a billboard at South Arlington and West Turkeyfoot Lake roads in Green. The second-place winner was Ryan Goeckner of Green High; third place, Dru Britton of the Portage Lakes Career Center; and fourth place, Katie Bishop, also of Green High. The contest was open to all high school students in Summit County.
• Hudson High junior Mary-Kate Krizman was one of three finalists to perform in the senior division of the 26th annual flute competition of the Central Ohio Flute Association at Ohio State University. She plays in the high school swing marching band, wind ensemble and orchestra.
• Jillian Yoder, daughter of Joseph and Nancy Yoder of Marshallville, received the Dr. Donald Rinehart Honor and Integrity Award at Ashland University. Yoder, a 2005 graduate of Smithville High, is majoring in psychology and plans to attend graduate school to pursue a degree in higher education administration.
• Michael Carps, a student at Wadsworth High School, was selected for the U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar program. The six-day program is for high achievers who have completed their junior year of high school.
• Jill Brownfield of Akron was among 10 high school seniors from Northeast Ohio to receive a $2,000 scholarship from the Cavaliers/FirstMerit Scholarship Program. Brownfield is a senior at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School and plans to pursue a degree in physical therapy or premedicine at college.
• Beth Canfield-Simbro, assistant professor of human performance and co-director of the honors program at Mount Union College, was selected as an honorable mention for the 2009 David Hoch Memorial Award for Excellence in Service by the Ohio Campus Compact. The nonprofit organization of 50 Ohio colleges and universities fosters community service, service learning and civic engagement on college campuses.
• Three Mount Union College students received awards in the East Central Colleges' 18th annual Student Literary Competition. Gregory Stephan, a junior English and writing major from Pickerington, won second prize in the fiction division; John Gallo, a junior English and literature major from Lisbon, received an honorable mention in creative nonfiction; and Christina Zwilling, a junior English and writing major from Diamond, received honorable mention for two poems.
• Akron-Canton area students inducted into the Teacher Education Program at Ashland University this spring included Anthony Carbone, son of David and Wendy Carbone of Hudson; Sierra Csiszar, daughter of Alex and Doreen Csiszar of Medina; Stephanie Hymes, daughter of Stephen and Darla Hymes of Barberton; and Katherina Moga, daughter of Gregory and Valerie Moga of Stow.
• Heather Fink, a 2007 graduate of Wadsworth High School, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Medina County Federal Credit Union. She is a nursing student at the University of Akron.
• Jennifer Larson, a professor of modern and classical languages at Kent State University, was one of 10 faculty nationwide elected to the council, the governing body for the American Association of University Professors.
• Graduating seniors Mark Muntean and Kristen Sasin, both of Canton, received the Outstanding Student Award at Walsh University. This was the first time the honor was bestowed on two students. Benjamin Daleiden received the Tower of Excellence Award for work and service beyond the classroom.
• Harvey Sterns of Akron, director of the Institute of Life-Span Development and Gerontology at the University of Akron, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Area Agency on Aging.
• Veronica Bagley, daughter of Steve and Monica Bagley, and Mikayla Lepole, daughter of Bruce and Michele Lepole, received scholarships from the Medina County branch of the American Association of University Women to attend the science and math camp sponsored by the AAUW. Veronica is in the seventh grade and Mikayla, the sixth grade, in the Buckeye school district.
Military news
• Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Mikkinzi R. O'Neil graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. She is the daughter of Joe O'Neil and Tracy Hathaway, both of Akron. The airman is a 2007 graduate of Springfield High School.
• Ohio National Guard Pfc. Stephen P. Smith, son of Paul and Linda Smith of Wadsworth, graduated from basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He is a 2008 graduate of Wadsworth High School.
• Navy Seaman Recruit Brandon J. Thur, a 2008 graduate of Garfield High School in Akron, completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
• Army Pvt. Cassandra Y. Satterwhite, daughter of Sally Satterwhite of Akron, graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is a 1998 graduate of Kenmore High School.
• Air Force Airman Jeremiah H. Henry, son of Timothy Henry of Akron, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2007 graduate of Garfield High School.
• Air Force Reserve Airman Marcus T. Gilmore, son of Tina Gilmore of Akron and grandson of Essie Gilmore of Canton, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He graduated from McKinley High School in 2006.
