Night at races benefits ballet

By Betty O'Neill-Roderick
Special to the Beacon Journal

Elm Ridge Party Center near Canal Fulton was the scene of the Ohio Youth Ballet's annual fundraiser Saturday evening. Board President Hollie Barcheck greeted guests for A Night at the Races, along with Director of Operations Nicole McKinney. Proceeds will be used for the dance school and costumes and props for the ballet.

Vice President Mike Hatfield said it's been an exciting year for the ballet. He enjoyed the event with his wife, Deanna, and Tom and Cheri Langenek, John and Chris Horrell and Tod and Linda Krino.

Artistic Director Natalya-Vyashenko-Connor came from rehearsal for the ballet's spring performance, which will take place at Northwest High School on May 31. Tickets for the performance are available by calling 330-854-1417.

Joyce Dawson, owner of the party center, called the Ohio Youth Ballet an asset to the community as she looked over the silent auction baskets, along with Lisa Evans, Eileen Kehoe, Bill Cady, Jan Kuhn, Claudette Hankins, Myzomyia Vales and Chuck Labbe.

Jason Reinmann of Old Carolina BBQ served a buffet, allowing guests to choose their own barbecue sauce. ''I like the Piedmont No. 5 tangy sauce with the pulled pork,'' he said.

John and Donna Lenardos, who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year, dined with their daughter-in-law, Donna, as well as Shirley Powell.

Robb Hankins, chief executive of Arts in Stark, had high praise for the Ohio Youth Ballet.

''We gave them a grant to choreograph a Japanese dance in conjunction with the recent Kimono exhibit at the Canton Museum of Art,'' he said, ''and after a wonderful performance at the Lincoln Lions Theatre in Massillon, they took the dance out to area schools and nursing homes in the community.''

Volunteers Sheryl and Craig West, Michelle Glauthier and JoAnna Metsker enjoyed dinner before setting up the windows for wagering on the races.

Excitement mounted as Jeff Hayes announced the races were about to begin. Dave and Beth Hatfield and Mark and Patty Fracker were delighted when ''their horses'' won.
