Akron parks to sound with symphony music

By Kerry Clawson
Beacon Journal staff writer

Free Akron Symphony concerts in the parks begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Hardesty Park (rain date July 11 or 12).

The Picnic Pops series stems from the tradition of John Philip Sousa and Arthur Fiedler, who made outdoor symphonic concerts popular in America. This year's program features patriotic tunes and symphonic pops of many styles, including highlights from A Chorus Line, Harry Potter and George Gershwin classics.

''The parks concerts this year are about American popular music. What we're doing at Hardesty, Goodyear and Firestone is a broad selection of American popular music, from early American to marches, jazz, gospel and film scores. Lock 3 is more specifically about the roots of American jazz,'' said Maestro Christopher Wilkins.

New this year, members of the Gospel Meets Symphony Chorus will sing at each concert. Concerts at Hardesty, Firestone and Goodyear Heights Metro Parks will conclude with Tchaikovsky's thunderous ''1812'' Overture. The Firestone concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (rain date June 28), and the Goodyear concert will be 7:30 p.m. July 10 (rain date July 11 or 12).

An ''American Roots'' concert will be at 7:30 p.m. July 5 at Lock 3 downtown, with a different program featuring jazz trumpet player Jack Schantz. He'll play a mix of jazz selections, including the premiere of arranger Paul Ferguson's Porgy and Bess medley. (Ferguson is director of jazz studies at Case Western Reserve University.)

The Lock 3 concert promises a surprise ending. In case of rain, the performance will move inside the Akron Civic Theatre.

Typically, 2,000 people attend the symphony's free outdoor summer concerts.

''It's an opportunity to reach people that might not normally come to an orchestra concert,'' said marketing and public relations director Jason Swank. ''It's just a great, great evening of music under the stars.''

Free Akron Symphony concerts in the parks begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Hardesty Park (rain date July 11 or 12).

This is a wonderful program arranged by the parks and recreation department. I am surprised that Plusquellic hasn't cut this program to finance his overseas trips.

Remember to vote FOR the RECALL on Tuesday.

Keep it classy, runuts. These events have been held through the ARB for many, many years.

I have volunteered my professional efforts for the ARB in the past. They are one of the best areas of our city government, to be honest.

Mayor Donny Boy is taking credit for these concerts? How dare he. Recall the mayor.

OMG,

Tongue-in-cheek I'm sure, but for the sake of clarity, the first time "Plusquellic" was uttered was by a commenter.
