AKRON: Doris Higgins of Akron received the Heart Award from Summit County Children Services during the recent 59th annual Foster Parent Recognition Dinner.
She has fostered two children. She was given the award — the highest honor at the event — ''for her unconditional love, long-term commitment, unending support and guiding hand given to the children placed in her care.''
Other award recipients were:
• Veteran Foster Family of the Year: Deborah Dardie of Akron.
• Rookie Foster Family of the Year, Bobby and Gloria Billingsley of Twinsburg.
• Retiring Foster Parents, Christine Bolen of Norton (40 years of service), Anthony and Karen Bryant of Akron (25 years of service), Clotifay Petush of Akron (20 years of service), Dorothy Davis of Akron (10 years of service), and Hazel Cossey of Akron (10 years of service).
• Foster Care Month Slogan Contest winners: John and Crystal Abernathy, of North Canton, whose slogan ''Watch Life Bloom: Foster/Adopt a Child'' was used in this year's local Foster Care Month activities; and Morris and Amanda Smith of Akron, whose slogan ''Fostering: Opening Your Home & Heart to a Child'' will be used to celebrate local Foster Care Month activities in 2010.
