Three-day fair will feature Ohio's largest tractor parade, car show, chicken dinner at local church

GARRETTSVILLE: Tractors, canoes, rapid hamburger eating and even a hometown Garrettsville Idol competition will highlight the annual Garrettsville SummerFest this weekend in the Portage County community.
SummerFest event organizer Aaron King said up to 10,000 people are expected to attend the three-day event that will be held from 6 to 11 tonight and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The festival is held in the center of the village at the intersection of state Routes 88 and 82, and this year will events will also be held on the Windham Street bridge on state Route 82.
SummerFest coincides with the 50th Annual St. Ambrose Church Chicken Dinner Festival, held from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the church at 10692 Freedom Street. Dinners are $8 for adults and $5 for children.
The Windham Street bridge connects SummerFest and the St. Ambrose event.
The weekend includes three stages of entertainment and two parades — one at 3 p.m. Saturday that will feature more than 200 tractors and is billed as Ohio's largest tractor parade — and the grand parade with 60 to 80 units at noon Sunday.
The tractor parade, King said, will be followed by a car show at 5 p.m., a hamburger-eating contest at 6 p.m. and fireworks at 10 p.m. Saturday.
Traffic will be routed around town during the festival.
''It's crazy,'' said King, who owns SkyLane Bowling Alley and Cal's Restaurant in Garrettsville. ''It's total gridlock.''
This is the second year the St. Ambrose event and SummerFest have been held on the same weekend.
There will be 12 different canoe competitions Saturday in Silver Creek, which runs through the village.
Sunday's big event is the Garrettsville Idol competition at 7 p.m. Twenty-two contestants, who have survived two previous cuts, will compete for $1,500 in prizes.
SummerFest, sponsored this year by Kepich Ford and the Main Street Grille and Brewing Company, in the past has made contributions to charity.
After last year's event, $500 was donated to each of six local active duty members of the military, King said.

There is the coolest tractor-upgrade shop in Garrettsville. They make race vehicles out of lawn tractors.
