Venetian Nights was the theme for the 14th annual Gala at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens Friday evening. Fuad and Elizabeth Khayyat co-chaired the annual event, which was expected to raise $150,000 for special programs and operations at Stan Hywet.
The evening began with a Patrons Party in Corbin Conservatory. Cheryl and Dave Venarge enjoyed conversation with Pat and Dick Kemph while ''Three Tenors'' from the University of Akron entertained.
A gentle summer breeze drifted through the Great Garden, where 400 guests enjoyed cocktails. Venetian Players Bridgitt Staudt, Katie Edmonds, Stephen Carder and Jacob Rounds entertained. Tracy Walker, Vicki Brockman, Jeanne Locastro and Laura Milo looked over silent auction items that included a garden party, a New Year's Eve party, a puppy picnic and dinner party at Stan Hywet.
Kate Smucker and Andrea Bologna discussed which of their ''well-behaved'' dogs they would bring to the Barkitecture Fundraiser, Throw Us a Bone, on Aug. 21. Tia and Jason Butterworth introduced her brother, Theo Stathopoulos, and fiance Jane Lettieri, to Mike and Jan Wojno. Sharon Hershey sold raffle tickets for a unique Goodyear racing package. Georgia Castrigano bid on a girls' night out at Stan Hywet.
As the sun set, the Venetian Players led the way to dinner in a giant tent on the Bowling Lawn, where Bill Rini and his staff from A Taste of Excellence served grilled beef tenderloin topped with a portobello mushroom demiglace, and swordfish with a Thai glaze. Enjoying the event were John and Vicki Mercer, Jim and Leslie Pickard, Nick and Cindy Browning, Fran Buchholzer, Barb Musci, John and Cyndee Debo, and Dr. Luis and Theresa Proenza.
Steve Strayer, chairman of the board of trustees, thanked guests for their continuing support of Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens and praised the Khayyats and their committee for planning the lovely evening. After dinner Jerry Bruno and his orchestra provided music for dancing under the stars.
