Q: I saw a plant called an everblooming geranium advertised in the paper. It didn't look like the annual geraniums I'm familiar with. What is it?

A: It's no wonder you're puzzled. Geraniums represent a case of mistaken identity.
The annuals we call geraniums really aren't, at least not from a botanical standpoint. They're from the genus Pelargonium and are considered annuals in our area because they can't survive our winters.
True geraniums — that is, plants from the genus Geranium — are commonly called cranesbill. That's what the everblooming geranium you saw in the ad is. Most varieties are hardy in our zone.
