20 area students win Green Spaces awards

Twenty students from Akron-area schools were honored this week in Project EverGreen's Art of Green Spaces Competition.

The winners were announced Wednesday at the Akron-Summit County Public Library.

Students from kindergarten through 12th grade were challenged to use art, music, writing, dance or drama to express the importance of green spaces to the environment, economy and quality of life. Green spaces include well-managed lawns and landscapes, gardens, parks, sports fields and golf courses.

Elementary school winners are:

Art: Evelyn Nyerges, first place; Mikaela Lane, second; and Stevie Mazziotta, third. All are from Indian Trail Elementary School in Stow.

Writing: Ally Mazziotta, Indian Trail, first place.

Middle school winners are:

Drama: Team of Hallie Heffernan, Erin Siegferth, Alexis Hanson, Tailashay Thorton and Kierra Dunkley of Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts in Akron, first place.

Art team competition: Myah Dozier and Tiara Thornton of Akron's Litchfield Middle School, first place; and Lucien Milford and Amanda Lang of Miller South, second.

Art individual competition: Karla Dawson, first place; Zana Phairr, second; and Anesa Harris, third place. All are from Litchfield.

Writing: Haley R. Calhoun, Miller South, first place.

High school winners are:

Art: Andrew Scott, first place; Emily Petz, second; and Zach Herring, third. All are from Akron's Firestone High School.

First-place winners received $100; second-place winners, $75; and third-place winners, $50.

 

In-home consultation

Green Acres Furniture near Mount Eaton is enticing shoppers with a new service: interior design consulting.

The Amish-owned furniture store is offering free in-home design consultations by interior designer Marlene Eggeman. She will visit homes within a 50-mile radius, although farther trips are possible for a mileage fee.

Green Acres Furniture sells furniture in a variety of styles, not all traditional. Much of the furniture is made in the company's workshop.

The store is on state Route 241 in Wayne County's Paint Township, about two miles north of Mount Eaton.

Ask the Gardener, noon to 4 p.m. today, Cleveland Botanical Garden, 11030 East Blvd. Representatives of Cuyahoga County Master Gardeners will answer questions. Garden admission: $7.50; children ages 3-12, $3; members and younger children, free. Information: 216-721-1600 or http://www.cbgarden.org.

Rain barrel auction, 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Lock 3 Park, 200 S. Main St., Akron. Auction of rain barrels decorated by high school students in the University of Akron's Arts LIFT summer program. Proceeds support Keep Akron Beautiful's programs.

Warm Up Akron meetings, 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Mogadore Branch, Akron-Summit County Public Library, 144 S. Cleveland Ave. Members knit and crochet rectangles that are used to make afghans for needy people in the Akron area, and they'll teach others the skills. Rain barrel workshop, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, University of Akron's Folk Hall, Room 165, 150 E. Exchange St. Learn about the benefits of rain barrels and how to assemble one. Music in the Garden, a Botanical Arts for Kids: Arts in the Garden program, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday, Cleveland Botanical Garden's Hershey Children's Garden, 11030 East Blvd. For children ages 3-10. Additional programs July 16 (theater), July 23 (dance and movement) and July 30 (visual arts). Single-session fee: $10 for a member's child or $12 for other children. Lakes Tour, July 15, starting at the Olde Harbor Inn, 562 Portage Lakes Drive, Coventry Township. Tour of five homes on the Portage Lakes via pontoon boats. Tickets at three price levels are available: $40, with boarding from 11 a.m. to noon; $55, which includes boarding from 10:30 to 11 a.m. and a commemorative sun catcher; and $70, which includes boarding at 9:30 a.m., brunch at one of the homes and the sun catcher. Summer Garden Tea, July 19, Hoover Historical Center in Hoover Park, 1875 E. Maple St., North Canton. Tea at 1 p.m. in the park's Hoover Banquet Hall. Tours of the center's herb garden, 3-5 p.m. Unique Boutique will offer plants as well as garden- and tea-related items. $16. Reservations due Friday. Mail-in forms available at 330-499-0287. Proceeds benefit the Herb Society at the Hoover Historical Center.
