• The Girl Scouts of North East Ohio honored Lois Waples of Suffield Township, a volunteer with the Visiting Nurse Service, as a 2009 Hidden Heroine who has made significant contributions to her community through volunteer work.
• New presiding officers for the 32nd degree Scottish Rite Masons of the Valley of Akron are James D. Booth of New Philadelphia, Leroy A. Hackenberg of Barberton, George R. Nockengost of Norton and Kenneth E. Gang of Mogadore.
• The winners of the Highland Library Creativity Showcase, People's Choice Awards, were Anna Hernandez, (ages 8 to 12); Acacia Bach and Heather Weidig (ages 13 to 19); and Patricia Quirk (ages 18 and up). Theirs were among 36 entries submitted to the contest in Medina County's Granger Township.
• The United Way of Summit County honored Akron police Officer Michael Gould Sr. as Volunteer of the Year at its annual celebration of volunteers.
• Lane R. Delker of Akron, a flotilla commander for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, was one of three finalists for the organization's Charles S. Greanoff Inspirational Leadership Award. His wife, Jackie, is his deputy.
• The Akron Area YMCA recognized these 2008 adult and youth volunteers at its branches: Ken Shley, adult volunteer, and Kayla Denny, youth volunteer, Canal Square YMCA; Brent Kuwatch, adult, and Anna Myers, youth, Camp Y-Noah; Vanessa Robinson, adult, and Taleitha Varner, youth, Child Care; Mechelle Simmons-Miller, adult, and Kayla Phok, youth, East Akron/Phoenix YMCA; Mandie and Justin Gardner, adults, and Garfield High School Special Education Students, youth, Firestone Park YMCA; Sandra Bartley, adult, and Marqwe Hughes, youth, Green Family YMCA; and Lisa Davenport, adult, and Dylan Thomas, youth, Lake Anna YMCA.

• Sharon Rae of Akron was elected vice president of performance with the National Dance Association. She is a former educator at the University of Akron and Mount Union College and is director of the Sharon Rae Dance School in Akron.
• Keith and Susan Hill of Stow are the Star Volunteers for June for Metro Parks, Serving Summit County. They started volunteering for the park district in 2006 and have accumulated 400 service hours.
School news
• An Oberlin graduate from Richfield received a $28,000 grant to promote jump roping in Tanzania and Kenya this summer. Psychology major Michael Fry is a 13-year devotee of jump roping who eventually hopes to see the activity certified as an Olympic sport. The grant comes from a college project funded by private foundations.
• Matthew R. Beckley, son of Gary and Marlene Beckley of Akron, received the Nicholas DiCaprio Distinguished Graduate Award for excellence in psychology at his graduation from John Carroll University.
• New officers on the Hiram College Board of Trustees are Chairman Kenneth Moore, a partner at Squire, Sanders & Dempsey; Vice Chairwoman Elizabeth Juliano, president of Litigation Management Inc.; and Treasurer Carl Draucker, also a partner at Squire, Sanders & Dempsey.
• Stephanie Mehle, a freshman at Kent State University, was selected for the National Leadership Council, which is part of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, for the 2009-10 school year. She is a double major in justice studies and political science.
• Michelle Cudnik, an assistant professor of pharmacy practice at the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy, received the Ohio Health-System Pharmacist of the Year Award from the Ohio Health-System Pharmacist Association.
• Two Hudson residents were among five juniors at Western Reserve Academy who were named Burton D. Morgan Leaders for the 2009-10 academic year. Jaskaran Bains and Emily Depew will receive $10,000 scholarships from the foundation for their leadership abilities.
Military news
• Air Force Airman Keith E. Patti, son of Lynn Patti of Akron, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He graduated in 2003 from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron.
• Air Force Airman 1st Class Alexander A. Devus, son of Katherine Devus of Akron, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2005 graduate of Green High School.
• Army Pfc. Ryan Spencer, son of Joe and Sherry Spencer of Wadsworth, completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. He is a 2007 graduate of Wadsworth High School.
• Aaron Hymes, son of David L. Hymes of Uniontown, was promoted to Navy seaman apprentice after graduating from the Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
• Navy Chief Petty Officer L. Scott Warrington, son of Ida B. Osiek of Barberton, retired from the Navy with 20 years of service.
• Duane LaClair, son of Albert and Margaret LaClair of Fowler, was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. His wife, Colleen, is the daughter of Sam and Ellen Holvey of Akron. LaClair graduated from Joseph Badger High in Kinsman in 1981 and Youngstown State in 1989.
