Gallery on Greens sinks a hole in one

Museum may make benefit a yearly event

By Betty O'Neill-Roderick
Special to the Beacon Journal

The Massillon Museum collaborated with Glenmoor Country Club to present Gallery on the Greens last weekend.

Twenty-nine Ohio artists participated in the alfresco art exhibition, setting up their work in white tents that lined the boulevard to the clubhouse.

The country club offered wine and refreshments Saturday and Sunday as guests wandered from tent to tent admiring the artists' work, which was available for sale.

The event opened with a VIP Gala Reception in the clubhouse Friday evening.

Alex Nicholis and Jill Bacon welcomed guests and assigned bid numbers for the silent auction.

Artists Ted Lawson, Arlene Mizeres, Donna Ischo, Jeannie Johns and Lisa Taylor looked over the array of artwork on display in the silent auction, while Gretchen Schrantz sold tickets for the basket raffle.

Christine Shearer, executive director of the museum, said proceeds from the gala would be used for the museum's third-floor collections renovation project.

Sandi Thouvenin said the event promotes the many talented artists in Ohio, while Jeff McMahan, president of the museum's board of trustees, said that with the success of the first Gallery on the Greens, it was sure to become an annual event.

''This is the photographers' table,'' Stephen McNulty said as he introduced Steve Ohman, Mike Donnelly and Bob Baker. Retired Congressman Ralph Regula and his wife, Mary, introduced their daughter, Martha, who designs striking jewelry.

Marilyn Rathbun said she began painting as a hobby 10 years ago, and her husband, Bob, frames all of her work.

Jerome White said he now teaches art at his alma mater, Cleveland Heights High School.

Executive Chef Brendan Meeker and his Glenmoor staff prepared a buffet of roast strip loin, chicken cacciatore and salmon, plus miniature cheesecakes for dessert.

Ken Emerick, art program coordinator at the Ohio Arts Council, and Bob Sanderson, president of the Massillon Chamber of Commerce, were jurors and announced the prize winners.

Annette Poitau was awarded best in show, Lisa Ayres Surber was second and Chris Wurst was third. Honorable mentions were awarded to Ted Lawson, Heather Dressler and Robert Baker.
