Author Sarah Vowell won't be bringing her droll take on American life and history to Akron this fall as scheduled.
The Akron-Summit County Public Library has canceled her Oct. 7 appearance in the face of cuts in state funding.
‘‘When you're trying to save big money, you look at big-ticket items,’’ Rick Ewing, general manager of the main library in downtown Akron, said Monday.
‘‘In terms of programming, that's a big item.’’
Ewing figures the move will save the library district about $12,000, including Vowell's fee and transportation costs.
Vowell's appearance is among several area events that have been axed because of the weak economy.
Last week, Akron officials said they were canceling Chriskindl Market, a downtown holiday event, as well as the lighting ceremony, set for the day after Thanksgiving.
United Way of Summit County canceled Chickenfest, set for Sept. 11-12 at Lake Anna Park in Barberton.
The Cleveland Botanical Garden canceled its biennial Flower Show planned for 2010.
Early this year, the Akron Art Museum cut its hours.
Statewide, libraries are grappling with reduced state funding.
Akron-Summit County library officials said last month the district is not filling some positions and plans cuts in other areas, including a 15 percent reduction in purchases of books, DVDs and other materials.
Vowell's books include The Wordy Shipmates, a quirky look at the New England Puritans, and Assassination Vacation, about Vowell's tour of sites connected to assassinations.
She was to visit as part of the Main Event speaker series. The program has brought authors to Akron since 2005.
Ewing said the library was not cutting Main Event altogether, although the number of Main Event author talks will probably drop from four a year to two.
Last spring, Main Event speakers E. Lynn Harris and Rick Bragg, a Pulitzer Prize winner, attracted large crowds.
Main Event is coordinated by Bob Ethington, manager of the popular culture division at the main library.
