Search narrows for ring owner

Reader has three tips on 'ES,' a '38 West High grad

By Mark J. Price
Beacon Journal staff writer

History never sleeps.

Here are some interesting updates from the world of This Place, This Time:

Three possibilities

The search has narrowed.

Last week, Gail Eisenhauer of Tallmadge requested help in finding the rightful owner of an Akron West High School class ring that she discovered 20 years ago in a parking lot.

The girl's 1938 ring is inscribed with the initials ''ES.'' It has a raised image of a buffalo or bull over the ''W'' of ''West.''

Reader Arlene McDougall, 87, of Green, who graduated from West High in June 1939, was kind enough to look through her Rodeo yearbooks dating back to 1936.

She found three 1938 classmates with those initials: January graduate Eleanor Schneider and June graduates Evelyn Stetter and Elsie Schleicte.

McDougall knows what it's like to lose such a treasure.

''When I was first married, my husband hadn't quite finished school because he joined the Army,'' she said. ''He always liked my class ring, so I had it made larger and gave it to him to wear. And wouldn't you know, he lost it. He was working in the motor pool on a truck, and he accidentally dropped it in the mud.''

Somewhere deep in the Florida muck is a West High 1939 ring with the initials of the former Arlene Mattes.

McDougall was happy to help with this search.

''I certainly hope you find her,'' she said.

If you think you know the ring's rightful owner, please send suggestions to the address at the bottom of this column.

Another search

While we're on the subject of missing rings, Dorothy McClellan of Green wishes she could see hers again.

The trail has grown extremely cold. The ring disappeared 40 years ago at Clearwater Park off state Route 619 in Uniontown.

''My daughter wore it swimming, and she lost it in the pool,'' McClellan said. ''It was a Garfield High School Class of '45. My initials were DH at the time.''

She realizes that the chances of locating the ring are slim, but stranger things have happened.

Who knows? Maybe its finder has been waiting for this moment for 40 years.

If you know where it might be, please send a suggestion to the address below.

If anyone is in need of someone with a good metal detector that can search an area (as long as you know the approximate area to search, that is) in the hopes of finding a lost ring, feel free to contact me...
