If you go

Madison, Ind., an Ohio River town of more than 12,000, offers beautiful river views, one of the largest historic districts in the country, three wineries, several parks and preserves, and golf courses and casinos nearby.

Getting there: Madison is little more than a five-hour drive from Akron. Take Interstate 76 west to Interstate 71 south to Interstate 275 west near Cincinnati. To enjoy the river scenery, exit at U.S. 50 near Lawrenceburg, Ind., then follow Ind. 56, the Ohio River Scenic Byway, into Madison.

Staying there: Many lodging options exist in Madison, including many bed-and-breakfasts and inns located in historic buildings. Visitors preferring a river view might enjoy the Riverboat Inn, which is not a historic structure but does offer
comfortable, well-appointed rooms, and decks and verandas overlooking the river. Call 812-265-2361 or visit http://www.riverboat-inn.com. The Clifty Inn, at Clifty Falls State Park, is located just outside Madison and also offers majestic views of the river and the town. Call 812-265-4135 or visit http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/inns/clifty.

Visiting downtown: Most of downtown Madison is part of a National Historic Landmark district encompassing some 1,500 historic buildings. Among them are the Lanier Mansion, an 1844 Greek revival gem (812-265-3526); the 1850 African Methodist Episcopal Church, an important Underground Railroad site (812-265-2967 or http://www.historicmadisoninc.com); the 1895 Madison Railroad Station (812-265-2335 or http://www.jchshc.org); and the 1816 Lanier-Schofield House, a Federal-style structure built as a tavern (812-265-4759). Visitors will also find the Jefferson County Historical Society, with permanent and changing exhibits focusing on southern Indiana; and the full-service Madison Visitors Center.

Learning more: The Madison Area Convention and Visitors Bureau offers information on attractions, lodging, shopping, dining and outdoor activities. The bureau also offers an invaluable free guide to the city. Call 800-559-2956 or visit http://visitmadison.org.
