Amish romance set in Middlefield

Most novels about the Amish are set in Wayne and Holmes counties. For a refreshing change, A Man of His Word, by Geneva author Kathleen Fuller, is set in the tiny Geauga County town of Middlefield.

The romance centers on Moriah Byler, whose wedding to Levi Miller gets the story going. Soon the reader learns that Levi's twin brother, Gabriel, has loved Moriah since childhood, but has remained silent for propriety.

A few months into the marriage, Moriah is despondent. Levi has taken a blacksmithing job at a horse farm in Gates Mills, and spends a lot of time away; at home, he's aloof and erratic. When Moriah learns she's pregnant, she hopes the news will bring her and Levi closer together; instead, she receives a note saying he's left her and the community. When Gabriel goes to demand an explanation, Levi tells him that he's decided to live with the daughter of his wealthy employer; she, too, is pregnant.

Of course, Moriah is heartbroken, but with her family and faith, she anticipates the birth and hopes for reconciliation. Gabriel's love for his brother demands that he pray for Levi's return, despite his feelings for Moriah. A subplot involves Moriah's brother Tobias and his relationship with willful Rachel.

There is much that is predictable about A Man of His Word, but it is well crafted and satisfying escapism. A Man of His Word (291 pages, softcover) costs $14.99 from Thomas Nelson, a Christian publisher, and is the first part of a trilogy set in Middlefield; An Honest Love is scheduled for release in March.
E-book is witch's tale

A Modern Day Witch Hunt is an erotic novella by Twin Lakes writer Kiki Howell. It brings Kamillia, a writer of erotic novels, together with a reincarnated guardian whose mission is to protect her from the Masterna, a group that has accused her of being a witch. Kamillia always has been telepathic, but she's in for a big surprise: she really is a witch.

Luka, the Watcher who's been sent to take care of her, is from the 15th century, but he surely looks fine in his tight blue jeans and rock 'n' roll T-shirt. Kamillia is defiant about not wanting to leave her home to avoid the Masterna, but then her publisher asks her to travel to Italy to research a project. Trip to Florence, handsome traveling companion — why not?

The thin story hangs less on the reader's acceptance of the supernatural theme than on the presumption of Kamillia's allure. There are several graphic sex scenes.

A Modern Day Witch Hunt (148 pages, softcover) costs $4.99 in e-book format from http://www.excessica.com.
