• New trustees at the private, liberal arts Hiram College are Thomas Harvie, a retired senior vice president at Goodyear; Olivia Garfield, a former music teacher and community volunteer in Pasadena, Calif., who is a direct descendant of former Hiram President and U.S. President James A. Garfield; and Douglas Hardman, a 1980 graduate of Hiram who leads global operations for Booz Allen Hamilton, an international technology and management consulting firm.
• Dr. Michael Thomas of Thomas and Associates D.D.S., who is president of the Stark County Dental Society, and attorney Jeffrey A. Halm of Canton, a partner in the law firm of Buckingham, Doolittle and Burroughs, were reappointed to three-year terms on the Stark State College Board of Trustees.
• John Nelson of Big Prairie, a first-year student at Gettysburg College, received a Presidential Scholarship based on his grade point average, class rank and college entrance test.
• Andrea Lohr of Massillon is president of the Women's Chorus at Ashland University. She is the daughter of Harvey and Catherine Lohr and is majoring in international studies.
• Marla Iverson of Wadsworth is the secretary of the Athletic Training Club at Ashland University. She is the daughter of Janet and Richard Iverson and is majoring in athletic training.

• State Highway Patrol Trooper Nickolas B. Goodnite of the Canton post received the Patrol's Ace Award for excellence in auto larceny enforcement.
• The Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service gave its Justin T. Rogers Spirit of Hospice Award to Summit County Executive Russell M. Pry; Dr. David J. Peter, Hospice of VNS medical director and medical information officer for Akron General Medical Center; and Dr. Molly Kramer Scantling, Hospice of VNS medical director. The Charles M. Billow Quality of Life in Hospice Award was given to the Sisler McFawn Foundation and Westminster Presbyterian Church, and the Charles and Margaret Schreiner Hospice Compassion Award was given to Copley-Fairlawn Middle School and the Hospice Soup Ministry at Faith Lutheran Church.
• Louis E. Dudek, trustee of the Reed Memorial Library in Ravenna, received the 2009 Trustee Award of Achievement from the Ohio Library Council for 21 years of service.
• Barbara Lopane of Akron, a volunteer with Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service, received statewide recognition with an honorable mention in the Outstanding Senior Volunteer Awards program sponsored by Medical Mutual of Omaha. She has been volunteering at the hospice for three years.
