Ceremonies and special events to honor Veterans

These ceremonies and events celebrate Veterans Day in the Akron area:


TODAY

North Canton — 8:30 a.m., recognition ceremony for veterans in Hoover Hall of Performing Arts, Hoover High School, 525 Seventh St. NE. A reception will follow at 9:30 a.m. in the library media center. Guest speakers are Dr. Paul Herbert, executive director of the Cantigny First Division Foundation and former strategist for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C.; and Christo Lassiter, a law professor at University of Cincinnati. All veterans present will be recognized for their military service.

Students from North Canton Middle School will pay tribute to the service of local World War II veterans, while students from Hoover High will present a narrative multimedia timeline from that war. The event is open to the general public. Family members of veterans are encouraged to attend. It will be televised live on NCCS Channel 11. Parking is available at the Seventh Street entrance to the school. For more information, call 330-497-5635.

Copley Township — 10 a.m., veterans celebration at Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service, 3358 Ridgewood Road. Honor guard by American Legion Post 473 and VFW Post 7971, bagpipers from Archbishop Hoban High School band will perform. Comments by Summit County Executive Russ Pry.

Tours of the Hospice Care Center will be available. Refreshments will be served. 330-745-1601.


WEDNESDAY

Norton — 8 a.m., pancake breakfast for veterans and their families in the Norton High School cafeteria, 4108 Cleveland-Massillon Road. At 9:30 a.m. in the gymnasium, there will be a program featuring the school's band and choir. For reservations, contact Rob Howerton at 330-825-7300, ext. 532117.

Macedonia 8 a.m., observance at Nordonia High School gymnasium, 8006 S. Bedford Road. All military veterans and active duty armed services members in the Nordonia Hills community are invited to participate and are asked to assemble by 7:45 a.m. in the small gym at the rear of the building. A reception will follow the program.

Wadsworth — 8 a.m., free breakfast for veterans at Wadsworth High School, 625 Broad St. Assembly at 9 a.m. in gymnasium.

Akron — 8:30 a.m., a continental breakfast honoring veterans will be held at Martin University Center, 105 Fir Hill. Featured speaker is Vanita Oelschlager, a writer of children's books and author of Postcards from a War. Also scheduled to speak are U.S. Reps. Tim Ryan and Betty Sutton. Larry Van Camp, a U.S. Army World War II prisoner of war, and Cadet Joshua Bochkor will read the Ex-Prisoner of War Pledge of Allegiance. There will be an outdoor ceremony at 10 a.m. at the flagpole that marks the eastern gateway to Buchtel Commons. It will include the laying of a wreath and a gun salute.

At 11:30 a.m., UA's Military Services Center will host an event called Honoring Those Who Serve Celebration, which will continue until 2:30 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. The social gathering, planned to express appreciation for military members' service, is for students, faculty and staff that are veterans, military service members and their families, and invited guests. The event will feature food and raffle prizes. The public is invited to all activities. 330-972-7454.

Lake Township — 8:30 a.m., observance at the Lake High School gymnasium, 1025 Lake Center St. NW. Veterans will be served coffee and rolls in the school cafeteria from 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. Parking is provided in the public library lot off of Market Avenue North. Enter the school through door No. 7 next to the library.

Copley Township — 9 a.m., program at Copley-Fairlawn Middle School, 1531 S. Cleveland-Massillon Road, to honor veterans. A continental breakfast will follow. For more information, call 330-664-4875.

Bath Township — 9:15 a.m., veterans are invited to breakfast, followed by an assembly at Revere High School, 3420 Everett Road. The school's symphonic choir will perform, and there will be a POW/MIA ceremony. The speaker will be U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Brian M. Hoffman. A reception for guests will follow the assembly. 330-523-3202.

Lawrence Township — 10 a.m., ceremony in the gymnasium at Northwest High School's Puffenberger Hall, 8580 Erie Ave. N. For more information, call 330-854-2205.

Tallmadge —10 a.m., program in the Historic Church on Tallmadge Circle, followed by an 11 a.m. ceremony, including a rifle squad at the nearby Veterans Memorial. The speaker is George Baker, U.S. Air Force veteran and director of the Summit County Veterans Service Commission.

Barberton 11 a.m., service and Barberton Military Honor Roll in Lake Anna Park, sponsored by VFW Post 1066.

Brunswick 11 a.m., ceremony at Brunswick City Hall, 4095 Center Road (state Route 303). The public is invited.

Canton — 11 a.m., ceremony at Westbrook Veterans Memorial Park, 1235 Harrison Ave. NW. Veteran of the Year award will be presented to Mel Schlabaugh, who served with the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea and with the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam. Military vehicles will be on display.

Cuyahoga Falls — 11 a.m., ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in the median on Broad Boulevard between Front and Second streets. The speaker will be U.S. Air Force Capt. Randy Rivers, also a captain with Falls Police Department. Sponsored by VFW Post 1062.

Doylestown — Noon, recognition program at Chippewa High School, 100 Valley View Road. Veterans are invited to meet in the multipurpose room for refreshments at noon. Lunch at 1 p.m. At 2 p.m., visitors and high school students will attend a program with musical presentations. The school band and choir will perform. Call 330-658-2011 for reservations.

your ultimate sacrifice, all gave some, and some gave all, GOD BLESS each one of you! and watch over our soldiers in action as we salute them.
