Joseph Misleh, a seventh-grader at Hyre Middle School in Akron, was the grand-prize winner in the 2010 Safety Kids Calendar contest sponsored by the Summit County Prosecutor's Office. First-place winners in the annual contest were Hanna Thornton, an eighth-grader at Hyre; Brianna Rowe, an eighth-grader at Hyre; Mary Stezik, a sixth-grader at Hyre; Mackenzie Puzakulics, a seventh-grader at Hyre; Tristan Phillips, a sixth-grader at Schrop Intermediate; Robert Quade, an eighth-grader at Summit Academy Middle School; David Smethers, an eighth-grader at Hyre; Linda Tran, an eighth-grader at Hyre; Tricia Cunningham, an eighth-grader at St. Barnabas; Gabriel Weyand, an eighth-grader at Hyre; Cheyenne Miller, a seventh-grader at Hyre; and Alyssa Ferguson, a sixth-grader at Hyre.

School news

Kelly Casanova, daughter of John and Christine Casanova of Copley Township, was elected to the joint engineering council at Ohio Northern University. She is a sophomore majoring in engineering.

• Kent State's College of Nursing honored three graduates with Distinguished Alumnae Awards. Lisa Aurilio of Twinsburg is director of nursing at Akron Children's Hospital; Army Col. Nancy Hughes of Fort Jackson, Fla., is hospital commander of the Moncrief Army Community Hospital in Fort Jackson; and Molly McNett of Akron, is senior nurse researcher at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

Kimberly Ann Sdono of Akron was chosen to be inducted into the Beta Gamma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an honor society for two-year college students at Stark State College.

Sara Scarcella, a fashion design student from Uniontown, was one of the first three students to win $500 scholarships at the Virginia Marti College of Art and Design in Lakewood.

Patrick Roberts of Akron was one of four new members inducted into the Garfield Society at Hiram College. The society honors outstanding civic and business leaders. Roberts is vice president of development and alumni relations at Hiram.

• Three Akron-area students are associate members of the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society at Ashland College: Deanna Blosser of Dalton, who is majoring in toxicology; Victoria Boylen of Akron, nursing; and Ryan Yoder of Dalton, biology. Akron-area members of the honor society are biology majors Janna Pearson of Barberton, Jacqueline Skiba of Medina and Jessica Parant of Streetsboro.

Laura Dianne Guardalabene of Cuyahoga Falls was inducted into the Sigma Alpha Lambda national leadership and honors organization at Kent State.

Justin Barnett, a junior accounting and math major from Akron, was selected as a member of the Dowling Mentor Program at Mount Union College. He will mentor middle school and high school students in the Alliance area during the 2009-10 academic year.

Angela Neal-Barnett of Tallmadge, an associate professor of psychology at Kent State University, was selected to take part in the American Psychological Association's Science Leadership Conference this month in Washington, D.C.

Military news

• Air Force Airman Julian J. Portis, son of Donna McElwain of Streetsboro, completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2009 graduate of Streetsboro High School.

• Air Force Airman Deangelo
C. Haslam, son of Erika Haslam and grandson of Velma Winfield, both of Akron, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He graduated from Garfield High School in Akron in 2003 and from Ohio State University in 2007.

• Army Pfc. Gregory A. Allen, son of Charles and Mellissa Allen of Akron, graduated from Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga. He is a 2007 graduate of Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron.

• Air Force Airman Jareal L.
Gorman, son of Priscille Gorman of Akron, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

• Air Force Airman Cameron D. Moffit, son of Dennis Moffit of Cuyahoga Falls and Kyla Lamb of Akron, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2009 graduate of Cuyahoga Falls High School.

• Air National Guard Airman Dante D. Cheatham, son of Deborah Cheatham of Akron, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2004 graduate of Garfield High School in Akron.
