Handcrafted chocolates, cakes, cookies, pastries on Bittersweet's shelves
By Lisa Abraham
Beacon Journal food writer
Published on Wednesday, Nov 18, 2009
A sweet shop in Stow is set to open today with chocolates and baked goods that border on works of art.
Bittersweet's, 3767 Darrow Road, specializes in handcrafted chocolates, and sells cookies, pastries and cakes, including wedding cakes.
Owner Todd Horvath recently relocated to Ohio after finding true love with Gwyn Jones, who operates Empire in Kent.
Horvath has been producing House of Bittersweet chocolates from his home in Munroe Falls and selling them at Empire, but now will be working out of a shop owned by his mother-in-law, Catherine Cartwright Jones. Ribbon cutting is set for 5 p.m. today.
The shop hours will be Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., closed Sunday and Monday.
For information, visit http://www.bittersweetsstow.com or http://www.houseofbittersweet.com, or call 234-678-5860.
Holiday wine festival
It's that time already — the Galaxy Restaurant's Holiday Wine Festival and Grand Wine Tasting will take place beginning at 7 p.m. Nov. 27.
The event will feature more than 75 wines from all over the world, plenty of hors d'oeuvres, live jazz, cooking demonstrations, and wine items on sale. All wines will be available for purchase at state minimum prices, with 10 percent case discounts.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank.
Tickets are $49. The Galaxy is at 201 Park Centre Drive, Wadsworth.
The Galaxy also will be serving a Thanksgiving buffet from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 26. The meal is $24.95 for adults, $12.95 for children up to age 12, and free for children age 5 or younger. Large groups are welcome.
For reservations to either event, call 330-334-3663 or toll free at 877-659-0054.
Smile and say cheese
The Lockview, downtown Akron's favorite grilled cheese bar, is celebrating its second anniversary with a fall formal on Saturday.
The event will help to kick off the new menu of grilled cheese sandwich combinations. The party starts at 9 p.m. and formal attire, however creative, is encouraged.
The Lockview is at 207 S. Main St., Akron. Call 330-252-5128 for more information or visit http://www.thelockview.com.
Owner Danny Basone transformed the former Lime Spider bar into the Lockview two years ago, serving up grilled cheese sandwiches and his signature cream of tomato soup.
Thanksgiving pie sale
No time to bake this holiday?
Students and faculty from Summit College's Hospitality Management Program at the University of Akron are willing to make the pies for you. Deep dish apple, pumpkin and southern pecan will be sold for $8 for apple and pumpkin, $9 for pecan.
Order now for pickup on Nov. 25. Call 330-972-7113. Pies can be picked up between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the Crystal Room Restaurant in Gallucci Hall, 200 E. Exchange St., Akron.
Recipe for safety
Unattended cooking is the number one cause of fires in Akron, so Partners 4 Safety is sponsoring a cooking-fire prevention class on Thursday titled Avoiding Recipes for Disaster.
Akron Fire Capt. Al Bragg will talk about home safety preparation, preventing cooking fires, and how to react to an emergency. Certificates and door prizes will be given out.
The free program, which will be at the American Red Cross, 501 W. Market St., Akron, begins at 9 a.m. with a continental breakfast, but reservations are a must. Call 330-375-2211.
Sausage and beer
Restaurant owner Rockne Becker and brewer John Najeway, owner of Thirsty Dog Brewing Co., are teaming up once again for a sausage-making class and brewery tour.
The class is from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Thirsty Dog, 529 Grant St., Akron.
It's $65 and each participant gets to take home 5 pounds of sausage. In addition, there will be sausage and beer tastings and a tour of the brewery.
For reservations or more information, call Becker at 330-958-1335 or Thirsty Dog at 330-252-BREW (2739).
Christopher's closing
Christopher's Aurora Bistro is the latest restaurant victim of the lagging economy. It will close on Nov. 30.
''During this past year and a half of economic hardships we have tried everything possible to cut costs and preserve profitability; unfortunately, we have run out of time,'' owner Christopher Shydlowski said in an e-mail announcement.
In December, Shydlowski is to begin working at a new restaurant in Hudson, Gusto de Italiano, in the Acme plaza on state Route 303. It will feature pasta, classic Italian dishes, steaks, seafood, and ''a touch of Christopher,'' he said. Gusto de Italiano will honor Christopher's gift cards through June 2010.
No tears from this onion
The Cleveland Museum of Natural History's Natural History of Food series is beginning its 2009-2010 season with a dinner dedicated to onions on Saturday.
Spice of Life Catering and its owner chef Ben Bebenroth will be preparing a seven-course meal with wine pairings, made with food raised locally by small family farmers. Each course will highlight onions, while local authors and food enthusiasts Fred and Linda Griffith will offer education and narration. Edward Macek of Foster's Wine Estates will talk about the wines.
To reserve, call 216-231-1177 or visit http://www.cmnh.org.
The dinner, which begins at 6:30 p.m., is $150. The whole series can be purchased for $500, which includes dinners featuring chocolate on Feb. 13, balsamic vinegar on April 24, and cherries on June 19.
The museum is at 1 Wade Oval Drive, Cleveland.
The holidays are here
For those of you who give restaurant gift certificates for the holidays, here's some news.
The Olde Harbor Inn will be holding its gift certificate sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 27. Certificates purchased this day are 25 percent off face value, which means a $50 gift certificate sells for $37.50, and a $25 gift card sells for $19.75. Certificates must be used by March 31.
The Olde Harbor Inn is at 562 Portage Lakes Drive, Coventry Township or visit http://www.theoldeharborinn.com.
The Tri-County Restaurant Association, which represents restaurants in Stark, Carroll and Tuscarawas counties, also will be selling gift certificates good at any member restaurant.
Holiday office hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Dec. 14-23, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, Dec. 5, 12 and 19. The office is at 100 30th St. NW, Suite 102, in Canton. Call 330-499-7007.
