People Helping People is a list of charitable causes in our area that need donations or volunteers. The Beacon Journal has not investigated these causes, so donors should verify their worthiness and the tax-deductibility of contributions. A form for submitting requests to People Helping People can be found at http://www.ohio.com/charity, along with tips on researching charities and a list of causes published.

Girl Scouts of North East Ohio — Akron area Girl Scout Troops, 1 Girl Scout Way, Macedonia, OH 44056, is collecting shoe boxes filled with items for its Christmas Shoebox Campaign. The boxes will be given to women and children living at the Battered Women's Shelter, Access Inc. and Harvest Home.
Donors should fill shoe boxes with hygiene items, games, toys, books and other gifts. Items are especially needed for women and teenage boys. Wrap the box and lid separately, and include a Christmas card and a tag identifying the age and gender of the intended recipient.
Donations of loose items are accepted.
Christmas shoe boxes can be dropped off from noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 5 or 19 at New Horizons Christian Church, 290 Darrow Road, Akron. Pickup can be arranged by calling 330-472-2493.

ACCESS Inc., 230 W. Market St., Akron, OH 44303, provides housing, advocacy and empowerment programs for homeless women and children. It needs the following:
• Volunteers to help with gift wrapping from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 10, 14, 16 and 17. Minimum age is 15, or younger with adult supervision.
• Volunteers to dress as elves and deliver presents to clients on Christmas Day, starting at 6:45 a.m. Volunteers must attend a one-hour training session at 6 p.m. Dec. 15. Minimum age is 18, or younger with adult supervision.
