Oberlin's Allen Memorial Art Museum is one of the finest college or university collections in the United States, but to see its collection this year you'll have to travel to the Big Apple.
On Tuesday Side by Side: Oberlin's Masterworks at the Met opens at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Allen is closed in 2010 for renovations, and 20 of its masterpieces 19 paintings and one sculpture are on view there through Aug. 29. These will be integrated in the Met's great collection, creating new, provocative juxtapositions.
Works on view include the great Ter Brugghen painting, Saint Sebastian Tended by Saint Irene, one of the most important Northern Baroque paintings in the United States; Cezanne's Viaduct at l'Estaque; Kirchner's Self-Portrait as a Soldier, and an impressive Kirchner sculpture.
Founded in 1917, the Allen's collection comprises nearly 14,000 works of art from virtually every culture and spanning the history of art. The show was organized by Maryan Ainsworth, Met curator in the department of European paintings and an Oberlin College alumna.
Following the Met showing, a collection of works from the Allen will be on view at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., for several months.
As impressive as the Allen's collection is, it isn't the only Northeast Ohio collection to grace the Met's galleries this spring.
The Cleveland Museum of Art has loaned four works from its medieval collection to the Met's exhibit, The Mourners: Medieval Tomb Sculptures from the Court of Burgundy, on view through May 23.
The museum has loaned Mourner with a Book from the Tomb of John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy (1371-1419) by Jean de la Huerta; and three sculptures, each titled Mourner from the Tomb of Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy (1342-1404) by Claus de Werve. The last three sculptures can only be seen in the Met venue of the exhibit, organized by the Dallas Museum of Art.
