By Lisa Abraham

More than a dozen downtown restaurants will be taking part in the Taste of Downtown on Friday as part of ''Luau at the Lock: Downtown's Biggest Happy Hour'' in Lock 3 Park.

The participating restaurants are Bandito's, Barley House, Big City Chophouse, DaVinci's Pizza, Diamond Deli, Hattie's Cafe, House of Hunan, Jazzman's Cafe, The Lockview, Menches Brothers at Canal Park, Northside, Ohio Brewing Co./Damon's Grill, Olive Tree, Papa's Food To Go, the Peanut Shoppe, Spaghetti Warehouse, Spinelli's Restaurant and Wafa's.

Each will be selling samplings from their menus, and there will be discounted drinks. The event is from 4 to 7 p.m. The University of Akron's Steel Drum Band will play from 4:45 to 6:15 p.m.

The event is being hosted by the Downtown Akron Partnership. Admission is free with a Do Downtown card, which attendees can sign up for at the happy hour, online at http://www.downtownakron.com, at the Akron-Summit County Public Library or by calling the partnership at 330-762-9550.

Food menu coming

Jamie Jones has a degree in behavioral psychology and that could prove to be good preparation for her new venture — a bar and eatery called Tasty Jones' in the Merriman Valley.

Jones, 31, spent several years after college working in group homes. When she wanted a break, she took up bartending. She was considering going back into social work when her dad encouraged her to open up a place of her own.

The bar at Tasty Jones' opened about two weeks ago, but the kitchen won't be open for a few more weeks.

Jones and her cook, Damon Defago, who previously worked at Gasoline Alley, have put together a small menu of soups, salads, sandwiches, tapas items and desserts that all are under $10.

Jones said she has worked to make the place ''female friendly.'' Part of her inspiration for the establishment came when she and her mother and grandmother were returning from a day in Cleveland and were looking for a place to stop for a glass of wine. They couldn't find one place that suited all three of them, with most bars catering to crowds either too young or too old for one of them.

She believes the spot is welcoming to people of all ages, including families who want to come to eat. Instead of a pool table, there's a bocce court inside the bar.

The dessert menu has deep-fried Twinkies, deep-fried Snickers bars, and an adult float made with root beer-flavored vodka and vanilla ice cream.

Tasty Jones' is at 1714 Merriman Road in Akron, across from FirstMerit Bank. Phone 330-835-9030 for hours or a specific date for the kitchen's opening.

Don't look for hot dogs

The Cleveland Indians are offering three chances to dine on Progressive Field — that's right, on the field, not at the stadium.

On three different nights in August and September, fans can dine on the track behind home plate.

Tables for four are $500. For $1,500, one party each night can buy a table for six to dine on home plate with an Indians special guest, such as a former player or executive staffer.

Each evening begins with a 6:30 p.m. reception on the Toyota Home Run Porch, where hors d'oeuvres and champagne will be served. At 7 p.m. the three-course dinner is served with a bottle of wine. The package also includes parking and a scoreboard greeting.

Diners can bring their gloves and play catch in the outfield before eating. During dinner, an Indians game will be played on the scoreboard monitor.

The events are Aug. 9, Aug. 23 and Sept. 6, and a limited number of tables are available for each night. For reservations, visit http://www.indians.com, and follow the links for Tickets and Dinner on the Diamond.

Dutch celebration

If you're heading to Amish country this weekend, Dutch Valley Restaurant in Sugarcreek is celebrating its grand reopening following an extensive renovation, with Dutch Valley Days.

The restaurant was remodeled and its bakery expanded. There is a ribbon-cutting scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday.

All of the Der Dutchman restaurants, gift shops and inns operated by Dutchman Hospitality in Sugarcreek, Walnut Creek and Plain City will be taking part in the celebration.

Guests at any of the properties will receive a free gift, samples will be given away and visitors can register for prizes — a one-night stay at the Carlisle Inn in Sugarcreek, dinner for two at Dutch Valley Restaurant, a $20 gas card and a $50 certificate for use in the gift shops.

Come to the islands

The Vue Restaurant in Hudson is hosting a ''Caribbean Party with a Purpose'' to help raise money for the Hudson Community Foundation's endowment, which pays for the city's annual July 4 fireworks display.

The event begins at 5 p.m. June 27, with an Island Grill buffet served from 6 to 9:30 p.m. The buffet will have fruit, salad bar, seafood, jerk chicken, pork, shrimp, various side dishes and banana flamb.

Tickets are $19.95 and there are reduced prices on Caribe and Red Stripe beer, margaritas and other rum drinks.

Live music will be provided by Victory Boulevard beginning at 7 p.m.

For reservations call 330-650-1883. The Vue is at 49 Village Way in Hudson.

A $50 Vue gift certificate will be awarded for the most creative tropical attire, and the first 50 people to make reservations will receive a free Hudson Wine Festival T-shirt.

The Hudson Wine Festival is July 19 and 20 at the First and Main Shopping District. For information visit http://www.hudsonwinefestival.com.

Wine at the market

West Point Market, 1711 W. Market St., Akron, is holding a wine tasting from 7 to 9 p.m. June 25; petit chateau Bordeaux from 2005 will be poured. Cheese and crackers will be served.

The event is $35; reservations are not required.
