Portage County resident Jenn Thomas continues to parlay her Rachael Ray Show cooking success into new ventures.
Thomas and Stefanie Paganini, daughter of Northeast Ohio cooking school founder Loretta Paganini, will team up to host Dinner and Drinks on Time Warner Cable's Northeast Ohio Network.
The 30-minute show will take viewers from the market to the kitchen and the dinner table, showing how to make a simple meal from start to finish.
The show will air on NEON, Channel 23, at 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and at noon Sunday, beginning next week. A new episode will air each month.
Thomas is the winner of Ray's 2007 So You Think You Can Cook contest and has made several appearances on the show since winning.
Paganini is an instructor at the International Culinary Arts and Sciences Institute in Chesterland, which is a division of the Loretta Paganini School of Cooking.
Cooking in the garden
The Cleveland Botanical Garden is hosting its annual summer cooking series beginning June 10.
Every Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m., the garden will host a local chef who will offer cooking demonstrations, samples and instructions on how to prepare the featured items at home. The series runs through Sept. 2.
Seating is limited and reservations are required. Call 216-721-1600, ext. 100, to reserve a spot.
The garden is at 11030 East Blvd., in Cleveland's University Circle area. Admission to the cooking series is free with garden admission, which is reduced to $5 on Wednesdays after 5 p.m.
Also each Wednesday, the garden is featuring a different cocktail to purchase, in addition to beer and wine. Patrons can enjoy their drinks while strolling in the gardens.
Hats off to Hattie's
Hattie's Cafe has opened a new location in the lower level of Akron's Municipal Building, 166 S. High St.
It's the fifth location for the cafes run by Hattie Larlham. The cafes employ disabled adults.
Other locations are on Brown Street near the University of Akron, in the main Akron-Summit County Public Library, in Canal Place on South Main Street in downtown Akron and in Hudson on North Main Street.
Wine getaway at the lake
The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake is hosting its annual Toast to the Northcoast on June 11 and 12.
The event includes a presentation by Executive Chef Claudio Salvador, a seminar by the winemaker at Firelands Winery in Sandusky, private tours and tastings at three wineries in the Grand River Valley — Laurello Vineyards, Ferrante Winery & Ristorante and the Winery at Spring Hill. The tasting continues with a five-course dinner at the Lodge, paired with Ohio wines.
Saturday breakfast for two and late checkout are included. The Toast to the Northcoast package starts at $539 per couple, plus tax.
The Lodge is at 4888 N. Broadway (state Route 534) in Geneva-on-the-Lake. For reservations, call 866-442-9765 or visit http://www.thelodgeatgeneva.com
God of wine lounge
Chef David Russo reports that his new Bacchus Wine & Music Lounge is open, with a bar-style menu of just three items.
The lounge serves burgers, Creole fried chicken, and a variety of pizzas, which Russo claims are the best in the Akron area. Sounds like a challenge to me.
The 60-seat lounge is in addition to the regular restaurant and patio.
Check the pizza for yourself at Russo's, 4895 State Road, Cuyahoga Falls; phone 330-923-1000.
More wine events
Piatto Novo in the Sheraton Suites Akron/Cuyahoga Falls is hosting its monthly wine dinner June 10 with wines chosen for their compatibility with early summer flavors.
The wines will be paired with five seasonal courses prepared by Chef Roger Thomas.
Dinner is $65 plus tax and tip and begins at 6 p.m. Call 330-920-7530 for reservations. Piatto Novo is at 1989 Front St., Cuyahoga Falls.
Christopher's Aurora Bistro will host the Zen of Reds, with Arya Campbell from Laurel Glen Vineyards of Sonoma Mountain, Calif., at 6 p.m. June 11.
The dinner is $50, plus tax and tip. Call 330-995-2776 for reservations. Christopher's is at 204 S. Chillicothe Road, Aurora.
The Vue Restaurant & Lounge in Hudson is hosting two Flights & Bites in June, with five tasting bites paired with a regional wines flight.
The events are from 6:30 to 8 p.m. June 11, with Michael David Wines of Lodi, Calif., and June 25, with wines of the New York Finger Lakes region.
Each tasting is $20 plus tax and tip. Call 330-650-1883 for reservations. The Vue is at 49 Village Way.
Free doughnuts, floats
Friday is National Doughnut Day and there will be freebies.
Participating Dunkin' Donuts locations will give away a free doughnut to every customer with the purchase of any beverage.
Krispy Kreme stores also will offer customers a free doughnut on Friday, no purchase necessary.
National Doughnut Day, held the first Friday of June, was started by the Chicago Salvation Army more than 70 years ago, according to the folks at Dunkin'.
Today, Sonic Drive-Ins are giving away free root beer floats from 8 p.m. to midnight. Sonic has locations in Canton and Streetsboro.
Veggies keep popping up
