Q.: What is the shelf life of peanut oil once it has been opened?
— George Meidlinger, Akron
A.: If unopened, peanut oil is good for 12 months. If opened, its shelf life decreases to about six months. Opened or not, store peanut oil in a cool, dark place.
If opened, storing in the refrigerator will help to extend its shelf life by a few months. It will thicken up in the refrigerator, but will return to its liquid state at room temperature.
If the oil has gone bad, you will be able to tell by its rancid smell.
