Q: I purchased a painting in 1992 and found a clipping of an article about the artist in the back. How can I find out what the painting is worth?
— Lisa Taylor, Akron
A: You probably need to talk to an art appraiser. One resource is Gray’s Auctioneers and Appraisers in Cleveland, which offers free evaluations of up to three items by appointment on Fridays. Gray’s website is www.graysauctioneers.com, and its phone number is 216-458-7695. You can also take a photo of the painting and email it to firstname.lastname@example.org to get a rough estimate of the value.
The Akron Art Museum also provides a list of recommended appraisers at http://akronartmuseum.org/appraisals.
