Ask Mary Beth: Whitening mildewed grout

Q: What’s the best way to get mildew out of bathroom grout?

— Roxanna Kavanagh,

Atlanta

A: Chlorine bleach will eliminate mildew if it stays in contact with the stain long enough. Here’s how to accomplish that:

Put on rubber gloves and eye protection, and ventilate the bathroom as well as you can. Saturate small pieces of toilet paper or paper towel with bleach and stick them to the mildewed areas. Leave them in place overnight, and then remove the paper and wash off the bleach with warm water and liquid detergent, such as dishwashing detergent. Make sure the detergent doesn’t contain ammonia.
