Home and garden happenings — week of Jan. 21

By Mary Beth Breckenridge
Beacon Journal home writer

Gardeners can dig into their hobby at the Saturday Gardening Series offered by the Master Gardeners of Summit County.

The series meets from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on two Saturdays, March 3 and 10, at Messiah Lutheran Church, 4700 S. Main St., Green.

Topics are sustainable gardening, native shrubs, heirloom plants and herbs, new plants, the importance of pollinators, cooking from the garden, use and care of popular garden tools and glass garden sculptures.

Cost is $60. Two people can share the fee, but only one can attend any individual session. The fee includes materials, continental breakfast and lunch.

Registration is required, and seats are limited. A mail-in registration form can be printed at http://summitmastergardeners.org, or request a form by calling 234-525-7034.

Architect receives award

Susan Allen of Akron’s TC Architects won a merit award in the 2011 Design Awards, presented by the Ohio North Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers.

Allen is an architect, interior designer and LEED-accredited professional, a credential of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. She was honored for her work on a residents’ lounge at Akron General Medical Center in the category of commercial projects of less than 3,500 square feet.

Grand-prize winner

Hudson resident Gina Bishop was headed for Los Angeles this week as one of three grand-prize winners of the GMC Let’s Trade Secrets Challenge on Facebook.

Bishop, known locally for her HomeGirl barn sales, won the home improvement portion of the contest by submitting a video of the closet she made over into an imaginative space for her daughters. She was to shoot a how-to video on the project with Eric Stromer, host of the HGTV series Over Your Head, and won a $1,000 gift card in addition to the trip.

Bishop is getting accustomed to the camera. In October, she and her sister appeared on The Nate Berkus Show, designing rooms from yard-sale finds.
