School news

• Anderson University student Leah Eger of Mogadore was selected for membership in the Pi Kappa Lambda honor society for music students.

• Miami University accounting major Jared J. Sheehan, son of Jeff and Cindy Sheehan of Garrettsville, received a $1,000 grant from the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi to visit China.

• Graduating Wittenberg University seniors Kendra Anne Plant and Kristina Leigh Steiner, both of Wooster, and Kelsey Elise Ufholz of Akron received Departmental Honors in Psychology.

Ken Stoltzfus, chairman of the social work department at Malone University, received a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award to teach at Russian-American Christian University in Moscow next spring.

Krystal Coffman, daughter of Rochelle and Duane Coffman, received a $500 scholarship from the Medina County Auditor's Office to study dental assisting at the Medina County Career Center.

• Manchester High graduate Brittney Ollis received a merit scholarship to attend the Columbus College of Art & Design this fall.

Gretchen Petrie, a French teacher at Wadsworth High School, received the 2009 Leona Glenn Outstanding Foreign Language Teacher Award from the Ohio Foreign Language Association.

• Akron Firestone High student Chanique Perry, daughter of Gemma Perry and Marcus Perry, was selected for membership into the National Society of High School Scholars.

• Akron Firestone High student Lauren Barnes received a $1,000 Cargill Community scholarship from the National FFA Foundation to attend Ohio State.

• Graduating Twinsburg High seniors Melissa Boyes and Alyssa Bionda received the first Miktarian Memorial Scholarships in memory of Twinsburg Police Officer Joshua Miktarian, who was killed in the line of duty in July 2008. The students will use the $2,500 awards to study criminal justice.

• The College Club of Canton presented $1,500 scholarship loans for each of four years of study to: Olivia Fulton, a Massillon Washington High graduate who will study early childhood education at Ohio University; Brianna Zoldan of North Canton Hoover High, fashion merchandising at Kent State; Emilie Regula of Fairless High, international business at John Carroll University; and Joni M. Fabian of Hoover High, business at the University of Cincinnati.

These students received $1,000 tuition grants to complete their bachelor's degrees: Tanya Baxter, who is studying nutrition at Kent State, and Amy Cantley, education at Malone University. Yvonne Pressley received a tuition grant to help complete her master's degree in special education at Kent State.

Regula also received a $500 Memorial Grant given in memory of the late June Smith, a College Club member.

• Nordonia High School graduate Brittany Zaun received a scholarship from the ITT Corp. for study at Mount Union College. She was one of 16 sons and daughters of company employees who received the awards this year. Her father is Richard Zaun, who works at ITT's Industrial Division in Cleveland.

Kevin Dougherty of Akron was recognized as an outstanding graduate at the Ohio State Agricultural Technical Institute for his high grades, membership in the Golden Key International Honor Society and membership in campus organizations.

Ellen Csepe, daughter of Attila and Valerie Csepe of Norton, received a $1,500-a-year, four-year scholarship from the PPG Industries Foundation to attend the University of Akron.

Military news

• Air Force Airman Quinten L. Brewer, son of Ernest Brewer of Akron and Fay Brewer of Brooklyn, N.Y., graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2008 graduate of Revere High School.

• Air Force Airman 1st Class Vincenio A. Dawkins, son of Vicki Portis of Akron, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2008 graduate of Buchtel High School in Akron.

• Ensign William M. Adams, son of Bill and Nancy Adams, received his Naval Aviation Wings. He graduated from the Air Force Academy in 2007 and from Wadsworth High School in 2002.

• Army National Guard Pvt. Daniel T. Fisher, son of Daniel Fisher of Akron, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is a 2008 graduate of Lake High School in Uniontown.

• Airman E. Jacob Lalli, son of Tony and Julie Lalli of Akron, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2007 graduate of Akron's Firestone High School.

• Army Reserve PFC Levi T. Fogg, son of Amy Lucas and Trone Fogg, both of Akron, completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. He is a 2008 graduate of Springfield High School.

• Air Force Airman 1st Class Tyler J. Brady, son of Tina Brady of Akron, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2005 graduate of Springfield High School.
