Community news

• Three local Freemasons were selected to receive the Thirty-third Degree, the highest honor of Scottish Rite Freemasonry: James R. Moore of Barberton, a retired math teacher; James D. Fidler of Canton, a retired FBI special agent and executive secretary of the Scottish Rite Valley of Canton; and Eugene R. Wagmiller of Louisville, a retired training instructor for the Timken Co. They were among 110 Masonic leaders selected to be honored in Boston at the annual meeting of the Scottish Rite Supreme Council.

Christopher Schott was named an Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 385 of Bath Township. His Eagle Scout project was a book drive in cooperation with Old Trail School to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Akron.

• Goodwill Industries of Akron has named five workers as Employees of Distinction: Paul Howiler, an inventory clerk at ASW Global; Mary Lou Jyurovat, a protective services social worker at Summit County Children Services; Tammy Luhring, a caseworker for Summit County Children Services; Jackie Pritchard, a database administrator at United Way of Summit County; and Joanne Waters, an administrative assistant at the American Red Cross of Summit and Portage counties.

Thomas Strauss, president and chief executive officer of Summa Health System, was selected to receive the fifth-annual Community Medal Award in honor of his service and the support that Summa provides to the community, from the Summit County Salvation Army.

• The Summit County Mortgage Task Force received the Distinguished Law Enforcement Group Achievement Award from the Ohio Attorney General's Office. The task force was started in 2005 to investigate and prosecute mortgage task fraud. It is led by Chief Ken Thornton of the Summit County Sheriff's Office.

School news

 

W. Preston Parry of Akron, a business economics major, and Matthew A. Price of Medina, a double major in business economics and computer science, each received a $1,000 Provost Student Academic Achievement Award at Miami University for academic achievement.

Ryan A. Kozak, senior vice president and regional manager of the Key Bank National Association, was named to the advisory board for the masters of science in financial engineering program at Kent State. He fills the newly created two-year board position of alumni adviser.

Herb Hochhauser, an adjunct faculty member at Hiram College, received his seventh Emmy for his documentary, Beyond the Fence, a Memoir of Buchenwald. The film was selected by the the Lower Great Lakes Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences as the winner in the Community Service category. Hochhauser is a Holocaust survivor who served as a producer on the film.

Military news

Richard G. Sears of Stow graduated from Army basic training.

• Air Force Airman Tom Lockard, son of Tom and Juanita Lockard of Seville, completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2007 graduate of Medina High School.

• Army Pvt. 1st Class Josh Kessell, son of Robert and Michelle Kessell of Cuyahoga Falls, completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. He is a 2009 graduate of Cuyahoga Falls High School.

• Air Force Airman Brandon R. Ward, son of Kathleen Ward and grandson of Doris Dungee, both of Akron, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2007 graduate of Ellet High School in Akron.
