Food Notes: Restaurants are coming and going

By Lisa Abraham
Beacon Journal food writer

Several local eateries recently have flipped their open signs to closed.

The Creperie, which served stuffed crepes and breakfast sandwiches in Greystone Hall, 76 E. Mill St., closed after just eight months. It was run by the Akron/Summit Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Jim Mahon, director of marketing and communications for the bureau, said the restaurant just wasn’t attracting enough business to keep it going. Anyone with a gift certificate is asked to call Mahon at 330-374-8900 for a refund. Certificates also will be honored at Greystone’s weekly lunch garden on Tuesdays.

Also locking the doors are the Sandwich Board in Wallhaven and Metro Burger in Highland Square.

On the opening side, look for El Rancho, a Mexican restaurant, to open up in the near future at the former Yocono’s location.

News on Ellet Meat Market

Mark Freeland, the Suffield Township beef farmer who purchased the Ellet Meat Market in November, said he is hoping to reopen soon, after some delays.

Freeland initially hoped to have the market operating by the holidays, but he said finalizing the sale and work on the building has taken longer than he expected. The market is at 734 Canton Road.

Gervasi’s new wine party

Gervasi Vineyard in Canton is hosting a party on Feb. 29 to celebrate the release of its new wine, made from Nebbiolo grapes.

The event, which includes food stations, live music, and the chance to meet and chat with winemaker Andy Codispoti and wine steward Abraham McCune, is from 6:30 to 10 p.m. in the winery’s Villa Grande.

Tickets are $50 ($40 for Gervasi club members). Reserve at www.gervasivineyard.com or call 330-497-1000. Gervasi is at 1700 55th St. NE, Canton.

Cleveland restaurant week

The Downtown Cleveland Alliance is hosting its fifth annual Downtown Restaurant Week from Feb. 27 to March 4.

More than 40 downtown restaurants will be participating. Each will offer $30 three-course menus for one or two diners, and a $15 lunch option at select restaurants.

This year’s event features five new restaurants: Pura Vida by Brandt, Taza (Lebanese grill), Prime Rib Steakhouse, Pacer’s Ribhouse, and Noodlecat.

Several parking facilities will offer $2 parking to diners who show their restaurant week vouchers after 5 p.m. Vouchers must be printed in advance. For a list of participating restaurants, menus, and other events tied to Restaurant Week, visit www.downtown
cleveland.com.

Pancake opportunities

The Canton Rotary Pancake Festival is 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Canton Memorial Civic Center, 1101 Market Ave. N.

The breakfast includes all-you-can-eat pancakes, breakfast sausage, orange juice, coffee and milk. Tickets are $6, children age 3 or younger are free, and so is parking.

In addition, more than 100 prizes will be auctioned off. Proceeds benefit local charities.

For more information or to buy advance tickets, contact the Rotary Club at 330-452-2882, email info@canton
rotary.org, or stop by 203 Cleveland Ave. NW, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets also are available at the Medicine Center Pharmacy and Davies Drugs in Canton.

On Tuesday, area IHOP restaurants once again will offer customers a free short stack of pancakes in exchange for a donation to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

The pancake giveaway is from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Locally, there are IHOP locations in Springfield Township, Jackson Township and Massillon. For information, visit www.ihop
pancakeday.com.
