More than 20 restaurants have signed up to participate in the 18th annual Taste of Medina County, set for Oct. 16, at the Weymouth Country Club.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the United Way of Medina County.
New to the restaurant lineup this year are Rito's Italian Bakery and Madd Chef's Bistro, both of Brunswick; Caffessimo Cafe Catering & Bakery and Spunkmeyers, both of Wadsworth; Good Taste Wine & Food Shop, Rabbit's Foot Garden Center & Bristro, and Medina Country Club, all of Medina.
The event is from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $50. The country club is at 3946 Weymouth Road, Medina Township.
Tickets can be purchased at the door by calling 330-725-3926, Ext. 104; online at http://www.unitedwaymedina.org; or at the offices of the United Way or the Greater Medina and Wadsworth Chamber of Commerce.
Thanks from West Point
Akron's West Point Market is holding customer Appreciation Day on Saturday, with a free pancake breakfast beginning at 8 a.m.
There will also be an olive oil tasting from noon to 1 p.m. and a chocolate tasting from 2 to 3 p.m., both free of charge. The day includes a pig roast, when the market will sell pulled pork sandwiches for lunch.
Other upcoming market events are a beer and cheese pairing featuring Samuel Smith Beers from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday. The event is $15 and reservations are required. Call 330-864-2151.
From 4:30 to 6 p.m. Friday there will be a wine tasting. Cost is $20 and no reservations are required.

Oktoberfest at market
If you're heading to Amish country this weekend, you might want to stop at Heini's Gourmet Market, which will be holding its Oktoberfest on Saturday.
The store will hold cooking demonstrations and beer tastings, and will be selling plenty of German food, including sausage, sauerkraut, cabbage, noodles and apple fritters. There also will be pumpkin decorating and other children's activities.

Serving buckeyes?
Well, buckeyes may not be on the menu, but all of the food and wine will be local when the Blue Canyon Kitchen & Tavern offers an All Ohio Dinner on Thursday, Oct. 16.
The five-course menu will include pairings of Ohio wines from Laurello Winery in Geneva. Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $65, per person.

Chili Challenge in Kent
Students from The Bridges Academy of Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent, are hosting their annual Chili Challenge to benefit the Miller Community House, Portage County's only homeless shelter.
The challenge will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at the high school, 1400 N. Mantua St., before the school's homecoming football game.
Tickets are $5, for up to four samples of chili, a bowl of chili and a drink. Tickets for children under age 6 and seniors are $2.
The entrance fee for any person or group interested in entering the cooking contest is $10, and also includes a bowl of chili and drink.
To enter, send your name and entrance fee to Bridges Academy, 200 N. Mantua St., Kent OH 44240 by Friday.
All chilis will be judged and winners will be declared in various categories.
Wine tasting in Hudson
Vue Restaurant & Lounge will host Graff Family Vineyards, Chalone AVA, from Monterey County, Calif., for a wine tasting at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17.
The tasting will include the vineyard's Viognier, Pinot Blanc, Grenache, Mourvedre and Consensus (a blend of Syrah, Mourvedre and Viognier). All wines will be available for purchase at state minimum prices.
Guest speaker will be Scott Woodward from Appellation Wine Co., whose father, Phil Woodward and Dick Graff started Chalone Winery and ultimately the Chalone AVA.
Chef Rick Carson will prepare plated appetizers.

Harvest Dinner in Aurora
ThornCreek Winery and Spice of Life Catering Co. have joined forces for a Tuscan Harvest Wine Dinner on Sunday, Oct. 19, at the winery in Aurora, 155 Treat Road.
The dinner will feature an Italian family-style meal made with local ingredients from farms within 100 miles of the vineyard. The buffet dinner will include smoked Berkshire hog; olive-braised, grass-fed beef; heirloom organic vegetables; hardwood-grilled Chioggia pumpkin; aged cheeses and house-baked breads.
All courses will be paired with ThornCreek wines, including the just-released Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. Cost is $35 in advance or $40 at the door, but reservations are recommended. Call 216-432-9090 for reservations. The dinner is from 1 to 6 p.m.
Lunch is served
Great Harvest Bread Co. in Copley Township is now serving soup and sandwiches, made on its bread, of course.
Sandwiches are being served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, Oct. 18. Choices include tuna salad, turkey, ham, roast beef, veggie and of course, peanut butter and jelly.

Happy Anniversary!
Gregory's Family Restaurant is celebrating its silver anniversary — 25 years in business — all month.
While supplies last, they'll be giving free coffee mugs to customers and all month will have specials on three of their most popular menu items: eggs benedict, chicken rivel soup and pumpkin pancakes.

Cupboard check
McCormick & Co. has recalled its McCormick Enchilada Sauce Mix because it contains milk that isn't listed on the package.
The sauce mix was distributed to grocery stores nationwide beginning Sept. 17.
The product comes in 1.5-oz. pouches with an expiration date of ''best by AUG2910CH.'' The date is found printed in black on the back, bottom left of the pouch. The mix's UPC Code is 52100091600.
People who have allergies to milk run the risk of potentially life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product.
