Food notes: Get ready for SoupFest 2013

Break out the bowls and spoons; it’s time for the annual Firestone High School SoupFest.

The soup supper raises money for the Firestone High School Instrumental Music Association. SoupFest 2013 is 4:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 28 at the high school, 333 Rampart Ave., Akron. Local restaurants donate soup for the event.

Tickets, which are available at the door, are $7.50 for adults and $4 for children ages 10 and younger, and include unlimited soup, a dessert and beverage.

Congrats on 75 years!

Cleveland’s Sausage Shoppe is celebrating its 75th anniversary on March 3.

The shop, on Memphis Avenue in Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood, is owned by Norm and Carol Heinle of Brunswick.

The shop was founded on March 3, 1938, by Hans Kirchberger and Theo Johanni, using recipes they brought with them from Schweinfurt, Germany. Those same recipes are still being used today by Heinle, who started out there as a teenager cutting the grass and washing pots and pans, before learning the art of sausage making. He has been at the shop for more than 50 of its 75 years.

Cookbook author coming

George Geary, prolific cookbook author and dessert expert, will be in Hudson April 17 to teach a class at the Western Reserve School of Cooking, “The Deep Dark World of Chocolate.”

Geary, who is known as the “Chocolate Chef,” is the author of numerous cookbooks, including The Complete Baking Cookbook, The Cheesecake Bible, and his latest, 150 Best Donut Recipes. Geary, of California, is a former pastry chef for the Walt Disney Co., and has taught extensively throughout the country.

West Point wine tastings

Here is the schedule of Friday night wine tasting events at the West Point Market, 1711 W. Market St., Akron:

Friday, Pinot Noir Face-off: France vs. the U.S.A.; March 29, Staff Picks, favorites of the market’s wine team; and April 26, the Thrill of the Grill, wines to pair with grilled foods.

All tastings are from 7 to 9 p.m. and include generous food pairings. Cost is $35.

Nice local history note

Since I wrote last month about the 50th anniversary of Fiesta Pizza & Chicken, 1860 Newton St., Akron, I heard from the grandchildren of Raleigh and Mildred Mathias, who wanted to point out a bit more information about the shop’s location.

I mentioned in the story that Fiesta opened up in a spot that previously had been a drug store. However, the space was actually occupied by the Knoll Shoppe, which was run by the Mathiases.

The Knoll Shoppe was a combination grocery store, luncheonette and general store.

The couple’s grandchildren, Tom Gentry Jr. of Akron, Robin Seeley of Suffield Township, Bill Gentry of Kent and Julie Otto of Tallmadge remember it well, especially the shop’s extensive candy counter, which they recalled delighted many kids in the Goodyear Heights neighborhood.

I am happy to pass on the bit of history and to help set the record straight on the storefront.

Food show, beer fest join

The eighth annual Fabulous Food Show returns to Cleveland’s I-X Center Nov. 8 to 10.

This year, the show is joining forces with the International Beer Fest.

Organizers also have announced that the spring food show will not return.

Tickets for the fall event will go on sale this summer.
