Food Notes
Chefs bring expertise to Twinsburg market

Blue Canyon Kitchen and Tavern staff to show how to prepare fresh veggies, fruit on Thursdays

By Lisa Abraham
Beacon Journal food writer

Chefs from the Blue Canyon Kitchen and Tavern in Twinsburg will be appearing at the Twinsburg Farmers Market every Thursday in September.

Executive Chef Brandt Evans and his staff will show visitors different ways to prepare locally grown fruits and vegetables. They'll have cooking demonstrations at 5:30 p.m. and will provide the recipes for visitors to take home. The chefs also will use local produce in farmers market specials served at the restaurant.

The Twinsburg Farmers Market is near Twinsburg Township Square, near state routes 82 and 91. Market hours are 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays.

Blue Canyon is at 8960 Wilcox Drive in Twinsburg. Phone 330-486-2583 or visit http://www.bluecanyonrestaurant.com

That's corny

Cleveland Independents, an organization of nearly 70 independently owned and operated restaurants in Northeast Ohio, will be celebrating locally grown corn the entire month of September. The campaign is an effort to showcase the creativity of the restaurants and their chefs.

The consortium includes Akron favorites Papa Joe's in the Merriman Valley and the Big City Chophouse in downtown Akron.

Wine time

The wine tastings at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens have a new time — 7 to 9 p.m.

The next event is Sept. 11, when the theme will be Vino Italiano!, sponsored by Papa Joe's Restaurant and featuring Italian wines. The tasting will take place on the South Terrace, and guests will have the chance to view the exhibit A Period of Perspective: The Art of Gertrude Seiberling in the Music Room.

Each wine tasting at Stan Hywet includes light appetizers and live entertainment.

Upcoming tastings are: Oct. 16, the Vast World of Zinfandels, featuring sparkling zins, whites and big reds; and Nov. 14, when the theme will be Wines to Celebrate the Season, featuring champagnes, sparkling and dessert wines that would work well for holiday gatherings.

Tasting tickets are $39, $29 for Stan Hywet members. Advance tickets are recommended. Call 330-315-3287 or visit http://www.stanhywet.org

Celebrity chef spotting

Food Network Iron Chef Michael Symon, owner of Lola and Lolita restaurants in Cleveland, will be the featured speaker at fundraising luncheon for the MS Women's Committee on Sept. 26.

The committee, which is a volunteer auxiliary to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, raises money to benefit people afflicted with multiple sclerosis and to support MS-related research efforts. All proceeds from the luncheon will be used for programs and services for more than 18,000 Ohioans who have MS.

The event begins at 11 a.m. at Signature of Solon, 39000 Signature Drive, Solon, with a raffle and silent auction, which includes an original work of art by Robert Laessig, known for his floral paintings. Lunch follows at 11:45 a.m., with Symon's presentation at 12:15 p.m.

Symon will talk about his culinary expertise and his rise to stardom since he opened Lola in 1997. A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Symon has been named one of the Ten Best New Chefs in America by Food and Wine magazine, and Lola was selected as one of America's Best Restaurants by Gourmet magazine. In addition to being an Iron Chef on Food Network's Iron Chef America, he is the new host of Dinner Impossible on the channel.

Tickets are $75, $150 for patron tickets, which include preferred seating and program recognition. Call Jodi Shipley at 800-667-7131.
