Airports offering flu shots

Busy travelers can receive injections or nasal spray vaccines before boarding

By Cheryl Powell
Beacon Journal medical writer

Northeast Ohio's two major airports are taking a shot at keeping travelers healthier this flu season.

The Akron-Canton Airport and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport each are offering flu shot clinics to help busy travelers fit the annual inoculation into their schedule.

The Akron-Canton Airport is partnering with the Summit County Health Department to offer flu vaccines in the main concourse from 6 a.m. to noon every Wednesday and Friday, beginning Oct. 22 through Nov. 26.

Flu shots and nasal spray flu vaccines will be provided by nurses from the health department for $25 each.

The flu shot clinic will accept Medicare, Medicaid, SummaCare and Medical Mutual of Ohio, as well as payments with cash or check, airport spokeswoman Kristie Van Auken said.

The inoculations are available to everyone, not just Summit County residents, she said.

''Traveling is so germ-infested,'' Van Auken said. ''Anything we can do to protect customers from germs, we're delighted to do.''

At Hopkins, the airport is partnering with the Cleveland and Cuyahoga County health departments to offer flu shots for $25 (cash or check) from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every Monday and Friday through Nov. 24.

The airport's Rescue and Firefighting Department also is providing free blood-pressure screenings in conjunction with each flu shot clinic from 10 a.m. to noon.

The flu shot clinics begin this week across from gate C-2, past the secure checkpoint.

A second flu shot station for customers who can't access the secure areas will be available from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. every Monday through Nov. 24 in the welcome center area on the baggage claim level.
