How to know what those collectibles are worth

Maybe you're running out of room to store that extensive collection of Star Wars action figures. So it's important to assess the real value of your collectibles before you market them.

Consumer Reports' Shop Smart magazine offers a step-by-step guide to selling your collectibles at a fair price:

Get some free advice. Many antiques and collectibles dealers are willing to authenticate pieces free of charge.

Consult price lists found in guides such as Kovels' Antiques & Collectibles Price Guide 2007 and Collectibles Price Guide 2007.

Find out what your items are selling for on eBay, Kovels.com and other online dealers.

Pay for an appraisal. Visit http://www.appraisers.org or http://www.appraisersassoc.org.

Choose your method of sale. Dealers generally offer 20 percent to 50 percent less than so-called ''book value.'' Auctions typically pay better but there is a 10 percent to 15 percent commission.
