When ants go searching for food, water and shelter, they sometimes look for it in your house.
Pest-control company Terminix offers these tips for discouraging the pesky bugs:
Don't let pet or human food sit out. Store all food in sealed containers, and remove dirty dishes from sinks and countertops.
Clean floors and countertops regularly to get rid of crumbs, drink spills and other food residue.
Empty the trash regularly into a receptacle with a lid.
Trim trees and shrubs so they don't touch the house. That way, ants can't use them for access.
Seal even small holes or cracks in your home's exterior. Common entry points are the places where drain and utility lines enter the house and cracks around windows and doors.
If you notice ants in your home, clean their path with soap and water. Ants leave behind pheromone trails for other colony members to follow, and washing those trails helps remove the scent.
