Young Black Professionals Coalition hosts back-to-school drive Aug. 25

The Young Black Professionals Coalition (YBPC) and DJ Mr. King are hosting the fifth annual “I Know I Can” Back 2 School Drive and Community Resource Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 25 at Deon’s Grooming Lounge, 255 E. Tallmadge Ave., Akron.

The drive is designed to prepare Akron inner-city children, kindergarten through 12th grade, for the school year.

Last year, the I Know I Can campaign distributed more than 400 free book bags. This year, the group is hoping to double that number and intends on giving away bags as long as supplies last.

Cosmetologists are donating their time and services to provide girls with new hair and nail styles. Girls will also receive gift bags filled with items such as lotions, sprays and shower gels, while boys will be treated to free haircuts.

More than 75 area community resources, ranging from utility and housing assistance to job placement and secondary education enrollment, have been recruited to participate.

The coalition is seeking donations of school supplies and beverages for the event. Some donation ideas include food, beverages, promotional giveaways, pencils, notebook paper, folders (two pocket or binder), supply boxes, glue sticks, scissors and rulers. The group will accept donations through Aug. 20.

For more information about the event or the Young Black Professionals Coalition, visit www.YBPC.info or call Steve King at 330-701-8327 or Eric Fletcher at 614-668-2225.
