The Akron Pops Orchestra is comprised of musicians that have varying musical backgrounds. The type of instruments that are featured are typically found in a symphony orchestra. However, rather than being solely a classical group, the orchestra performs a wide repertoire of music including: Broadway show tunes, operettas, marches, popular and time-honored songs, light classical pieces, and movie themes.

“Our summer concerts provide a great opportunity for everyone to enjoy music and the great outdoors,” said Roger Leatherman, Treasurer of the Akron Pops Orchestra. “In addition you often get a chance to meet other families that live in your local community.”

The Akron Pops have a full calendar of concerts throughout 2013. Venues include; Metro Parks, the Quirk Cultural Center, and local libraries, as well as numerous nursing homes throughout the area. The group has been performing free, engaging concerts since 1936 and they continue to be a well-respected name throughout the Akron area.

“All musicians take pride in volunteering our time to play with the Akron Pops Orchestra,” said Dawn Harris, Vice President of the Akron Pops Orchestra. “We welcome any musician who would like to share the gift of music with the community, especially those that play string instruments!”

About Akron Pops Orchestra

In 1926, a group of well-respected physicians and musicians formed what became known as the Akron Doctor's Orchestra so they could share their musical talent with the community. Since that time, musicians from all walks of life have joined the group, diversifying its membership. To reflect that diversity, in 1986 the Orchestra's name was changed to the Akron 'POPS' Orchestra – a name that continues to be well-respected throughout the Greater Akron area.

The orchestra is comprised of 40-50 dedicated musicians representing varying levels of musical expertise. Each member VOLUNTEERS his or her talent, time, and resources to play with the Pops. Members are quick to share that the reward is seeing a smile or a joyful tear on the face of an audience member, or receiving a hug and a "thank you" from a grateful listener.

The Akron Pops welcome any musician who would like to share the gift of music with the community!
