A forum that will explore capital punishment is set for 7 p.m. Monday at the Johnson Center for Worship and Fine Arts on the Malone University campus, 2600 Cleveland Ave., N.W., Canton.
The session, called “Capital Punishment: How Should a Christian Respond,” is part of the university’s Worldview Forum Series. It will be moderated by Malcolm Gold, a professor of sociology at Malone. It will feature Richard Land, president of The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention and Stephen Dear, executive director of People of Faith Against the Death Penalty.
Dear has led the North Carolina-based organization for more than 15 years. During that time, he led efforts to generate more than 1,500 church, corporate and government resolutions for stopping executions and raised more than $4 million for community organizing to abolish the death penalty. He earned his undergraduate degree in political science at the University of Richmond and his graduate degree in international studies at Claremont University. He studied theology at the Maryknoll School of Theology.
Land has headed the Southern Baptist Convention’s commission for more than 20 years. The commission is assigned to address social, moral and ethical concerns with a particular interest in how those things impact families and their faith. He earned his doctorate of philosophy at Oxford University in England, his master of theology at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and his undergraduate degree at Princeton University. He was named one of the 25 most influential evangelicals in America in 2005.
