Nonprofit brings back Roaring '20s

By Joyce M. Johnson
Special to the Beacon Journal

The roaring '20s came alive at the 27th annual Women of WITAN's 2011 Wow Flapper Follies.

Pearls and feathers decorated every table and a wheelbarrow filled with bottles of liquor was up for grabs in the auction.

The event was held Saturday evening at the Sheraton Suites in Cuyahoga Falls. Proceeds will help WITAN (Women In Touch with Akron's Needs) support health, education, preservation and art projects in the Akron area.

Jamie Crabtree and Vanessa Fana co-chaired the gala. Guests enjoyed a dinner and silent auction as well as a reverse raffle. One of the grand prizes was a diamond necklace donated by Kay Jewelers.

Cigarette girl Devon Crabtree dressed for the part.

Members of University of Akron sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma Christine Copeland, Liz Gage, Kathy Duckworth and Mandy Walters sold raffle tickets.

Paul Rose attended with his wife, Stacy Rose. ''We went to a prohibition party a few years ago and we just updated our costumes,'' Stacy Rose said.

Brent Betts, in suspenders and argyle socks, said, ''I did some Internet research and then put something together.''

Julie Shutsa was able to find a costume while avoiding the stores. ''I checked my friend's closets,'' Shutsa said.

Catherine and Nathan Brulport enjoyed seeing the different costumes.

Dave and Kathy Blackett helped set up for the event. Committee members included Doris Antal, Debra Faber Cailor, Katie Goodwin, Maureen Vastaugh and Kathy Moock.

''I just want to kick up my feet,'' said Diana Snider. Her husband, Jim Snider, added, ''Last year we won the reverse raffle and we are trying again this year.''

Ailena Hyden said, ''I think this will be a great success for the women of WITAN and I am looking forward to high-bidding for some great prizes.''

The evening included a 1920s-inspired performance by the University of Akron Dance Institute.
