With towering cliffs, stunning geological formations, spectacular waterfalls and deep gorges, the Hocking Hills are the perfect place to escape the holiday hustle and bustle. Here visitors can celebrate the holidays by getting close to nature, and even decorate a Christmas tree for the abundant wildlife in the area. Mother Nature reserves special scenery for the holiday season when the sun sparkles on icy waterfalls, and the sandstone rock formations are covered with snow.
Hiking through the forest at Lake Hope State Park visitors can view over 100,000 lights on display, along with animated scenes, decorated trees and landscape lightings. Open daily from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. the Holiday Trail of Lights begins December 1, and runs through December 31. Lake Hope State Park is located on State Route 278. Special events take place each weekend, for more information call 740-596-3030.
The rugged geological beauty of the Hocking Hills can best be seen at Ash Cave, a cave once used for shelter by early Ohio inhabitants. At night a lantern tour of Ash Cave is guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit. After a winter tour, guests can warm up with refreshments by an open fire, listen to Christmas carolers, and help decorate a Christmas tree for wildlife all on Saturday, December 13.
Be sure to bring the kids to visit with an old-fashioned Santa, and inintroduce them to a Christmas of yesterday. Hocking Hills State Park is located on State Route 56, South of Bloomingville. For reservations call 740-385-6841.
Hop aboard the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway for a Christmas murder mystery tour. It seems secret agents have uncovered a twisted plot to rid the world of Santa Claus and Christmas. Now they have hatched their own plan to save Christmas, but they may need help. Visitors can enjoy "Santa's Slay Ride" on December 12. For reservations call 800-967-7834 or visit www.hockingvalleytrain.com.
By the way, on a visit to "Old Man's Cave" the kids will probably ask how the cave got its name - well it seems the cave is named after a hermit named Richard Rowe, who resided in the cave for many years, and is actually buried at the site.
Take the family to a Dickens Dinner at Glenlaurel Scottish Country Inn. Everyone will enjoy the five-course dinner, which is a tribute to traditional dining in Victorian England and Scotland. The stories of Charles Dickens are served between courses. Glenlaurel is located at 14940 Mt. Olive Road in Rockbridge, Ohio. For reservations call 800-809-7378, or visit www.glenlaurel.com.
Just in time for the holidays The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls completed The Gathering Place. Located on the grounds of this renowned Inn, it's a one-of-a-kind facility with 5,000-square-feet of open meeting space. The grand opening will be celebrated at a New Year's Eve party on December 31.
Built with recycled logs and lumber, The Gathering Place is located in an 1840s log cabin with gorgeous views of the Hocking Hills and lots of warm, natural lighting. It includes an intimate 450-square-foot windowed breakout room.
The entire building boasts state-of-the-art green features, including a unique rooftop herb and flower garden with walking paths for guests to enjoy. However, this rooftop garden also offers added natural earth and plant insulation.
The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls lies perched on the edge of a craggy gorge in southeast Ohio's spectacular Hocking Hills. Several log cabins that date back to the 1800s comprise the Inn, which is surrounded by breathtaking scenery and miles and miles or trails for bird watching, hiking, and horseback riding. The chef at the Inn prepares wonderful meals using produce from local growers, in fact, many of the herbs and flowers that decorate the Inn are rooted right outside the kitchen door.
The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls is located at 21190 State Route 374 in Logan, Ohio. For more information and reservations call 740-385-7489 or visit www.innatcedarfalls.com.
The Hocking Hills have hundreds of cabins and cottages tucked away in the hills; in fact, it's sometimes called the "Hot tub club of Ohio," because many of the cabins have hot tubs on the deck for guests to enjoy a good soak while viewing the wonders of nature.
Outdoor beauty, peace, serenity, it's all available in Southeast Ohio's Hocking Hills. For more information, call 800-HOCKING, or visit www.1800Hocking.com.
