Published on Saturday, Oct 24, 2009
Terry Provance, executive director of Oikocredit USA, will speak at 11:45 a.m. Nov. 5 during a luncheon sponsored by the Akron Area Association of Churches.
Oikocredit is an international Christian organization that turns investments into loans for low-income clients in developing countries. It also provides credit to trade cooperatives, fair trade organizations and small-to-medium enterprises in developing countries. It is privately financed through investments from individuals and organizations.
The organization was established in 1975 as an ecumenical movement. While it targets churches and church-related organizations to invest in social justice, projects that receive investment capital and loans are not required to be faith-based. Oikocredit estimates that it has reached 16.8 million people with 47.5 million loans in 69 countries.
Provance will share stories of Oikocredit's success during the luncheon at First Congregational Church, 292 E. Market St., Akron. Cost is $10 per person and reservations can be made by sending a check payable to AAAC, 800 E. Market St., Akron OH 44305. For information, call 330-535-3112.
