Second Baptist Church will launch its 117th anniversary celebration with a two-day revival at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
William H. Myers, professor of New Testament and black church studies at Ashland Theological Seminary, will be the guest preacher Wednesday night. Myers is the pastor at New Mount Zion Baptist Church in Cleveland and president and founder of the McCreary Center for African-American Religious Studies. The Cleveland-based inner-city center provides theological education for laity and clergy with an African-American religious experience that focuses on addressing social injustice.
Thursday's revival will feature the Rev. R.A. Vernon, pastor and founder of the Word Church. The Warrensville Heights church is among the fastest-growing churches in America. Under Vernon's leadership, the church developed a subdivision called ''The Word'' in Action, which operates a skating rink, restaurant, fitness center, pool hall, three basketball courts and two soccer fields.
The anniversary celebration at Second Baptist Church, at 690 S. Main St., Akron, will culminate on Nov. 22 with a service at 10:45 a.m. The anniversary theme is Moving From the Past to the Present.
