Church collecting donations

By Colette M. Jenkins
Beacon Journal religion writer

Volunteers will be in the parking lot at Akron Bible Church, 783 Brown St. collecting toys, gift cards, cash and nonperishable food from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today to support the church's annual holiday outreach to needy families.

Each year, the church provides hundreds of new toys to children in needy families through its Operation Helping Families ministry and more than 3,000 boxes of food through its Baskets of Love ministry. The holiday food ministry began in 1980 with distribution to a dozen families. Over the years it has grown with the help of donations from local businesses, individuals and congregations of various denominations.

Volunteers will be accepting new, unwrapped toys; gift cards and cash donations for the toy ministry; and nonperishable food for the food ministry. Each Basket of Love includes a turkey, potatoes, flour, sugar, eggs, bread, fruit, canned goods and other food items.

For information about donating to the ministries, call 330-376-5673. Checks for the programs may be sent to Akron Bible Church, 783 Brown St., Akron, OH 44311. Volunteers and boxes for food also are needed. For information about the church, visit http://www.akronbiblechurch.org.
