Veterans from an elite group of Army soldiers and officers who were deployed to western Europe during the Cold War held a reunion this month at the home of Bruce Vaughn in Clinton. The group went through intense training to prepare for the possible uprising and advancement of Russian troops. If called into action, the soldiers were trained for a “one-way mission” of carrying atomic demolition munitions into hostile territories to a predetermined target to detonate the backpack nuclear weapons, Vaughn said.
