Akron General Hospice of Visiting Nurse Services held its fourth annual Joyful Tastes of Life Thursday evening at St. George’s Family Center in Akron.
The benefit featured wines from around the world as well as signature food items and beer from local breweries. Sherrie Sanchez brought along her specialty flan, a Mexican custard, from Casa Del Ranchero.
Arlene Heiselman browsed the silent auction items and expressed an interest in the handbags and wreaths on display. “I love how the community comes together for hospice,” said Margie Skyrm.
WQMX program director Sue Wilson and WONE program director Tim Daugherty emceed the evening, which included a silent auction, raffle and live music. Karen Mullen, president of Akron General Visiting Nurse Service, addressed the gathering of 300 people.
Mingling in the crowd were Mary Meli, Margie Easterling, John Papp, Sue Hobson, Toby Gorant, Patty Myers, and Debbie and Scott Fausneaucht.
Guests were able to select a special “leaf” from Lynn Juppe and purchase one from the giving tree to sponsor a variety of programs. Helen Mitchner purchased several grab bags for her daughter, Nancy Contrael.
Patti Rabb won the raffle prize of a 32-inch HD TV, Sherry Foos won $500, and Jodi Wagner won a trip to the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. Dr. Dennis Wright won the 50/50 raffle.
Dorothea Clarke sang some classic ballads to the saxophone music of Patrick Munford.
The event was sponsored by Dr. John J. Petrus. All proceeds will support end of life patient care and supportive services at Hospice of VNS.
“Hospice is my heart and what they do for people and families is wonderful,” Patti Kelleher said.
