See an Oscar winner

Amour, a recent winner of the Academy Award for best foreign-language film, will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the Canton Palace Theatre. The film stars Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva as Georges and Anne, a couple in their 80s who then must deal with Anne’s failing health after she suffers a stroke.

It’s a wrenchingly powerful film, and was nominated for four other Oscars, including best picture, Riva as best actress, director (Michael Haneke) and original screenplay (also by Haneke). If the Canton showings do not work for you, it is also at Cleveland’s Capitol and Cedar Lee theaters.

Cold and hot

Looking for something to do in the snow besides build a snowman?

Instruct a group of friends to stake out a spot in the snow and drop to their knees. Provide another pal with a stopwatch.

Decide on how much time you want to give participants to build a snowball tower. Be sure to tell them to pack the balls tightly so the towers don’t tumble.

At the end of the time, ask the referee to measure the towers with a yardstick. The tallest one wins a box of Red Tamales candy.
