The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area nonprofit organizations and other organizations required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation.
For details about these and other volunteer opportunities, contact the Volunteer Center, 90 N. Prospect, Akron, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at 330-762-7601, Ext. 5512, or at http://www.uwsummit.org.
The following organizations need volunteers:
ACCESS Inc.: Volunteer drivers needed weekdays two to eight hours a week to transport adult residents to housing related appointments, to obtain clothing, etc. in Akron. Minimum age: 21.
Akron Civic Theatre: Volunteers needed 12:30 to 4 p.m. and/or 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. during shows to take and count tickets, usher patrons, serve as box office escorts and provide will-call assistance. Minimum age: 16.
Akron General Medical Center: Volunteers needed 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays to transport patients and visitors via wheelchair. Minimum age: 18.
Area Agency on Aging: Volunteer ombudsmen needed to visit nursing home residents as a resident's rights advocate. The next 12-hour training session begins Tuesday, Jan. 6. Minimum age: 18.
Ballinger TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) Clubhouse: Volunteers needed 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays to assist with office/clerical duties. Minimum age: 21.
Career Nurse Assistants Program: Experienced volunteers needed to create and edit quarterly newsletters using MS Publisher. Minimum age: 18.
CASA/GAL Program of Summit County: Volunteer Child Advocates needed to independently investigate and monitor cases of abuse, neglect and/or dependency. Next 30-hour training begins Jan. 15. Registration deadline is Thursday, Jan. 8. Two-year commitment. Minimum age: 21.
Friends of Pets: Volunteers needed to assist as adoption counselors and cat foster parents. Also needing volunteers to help with fundraising and grant writing assistance. Minimum age: 18.
Goodwill Industries of Akron: Volunteers needed to assist in the retail stores, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Mondays-Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sundays. Minimum age: 14, 12 with adult supervision.
Grandparents Against Sex Predators (G.A.S.P.): Volunteers needed to fingerprint children, help with phone calls, court observation, search teams and speaking opportunities day/times vary. Minimum age: 18.
Heaven Can Wait-Rescue & Adoptions: Volunteers needed daily to assist as cattery cleaners and to spend time with cats. Minimum age: 18, 15 with adult supervision.
Info Line Inc.: Volunteer Emergency Food Specialists needed weekdays between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a minimum of two hours a week/eight hours a month to answer calls from individuals in the community seeking assistance. Minimum age: 18.
International Institute of Akron: Volunteer families and individuals needed six-eight hours a month to help recently-arrived refugee families adapt to life in the US. Training provided. Minimum age: 18, 16 with adult supervision.
Junior Achievement of Akron Area: Volunteers needed to assist with special events held throughout the year. Minimum age: 18.
Laurel Lake Retirement Community: Volunteers needed daily between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to assist with data entry into MS Excel. Minimum age: 16.
Mobile Meals: Volunteers needed 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays to deliver meals to homebound and/or chronically ill individuals. Special need for drivers in Cuyahoga Falls. Minimum age: 18, younger with adult supervision.
New Destiny Treatment Center (Clinton): Volunteers wanted 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays to help with thrift store. Minimum age: 15, 12 with supervision.
One of a Kind Pets Rescue: Volunteers needed weekday evenings and weekend days/evenings to perform data entry and assist with mailings. Minimum age: 18.
Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP): Volunteers needed to phone and check on individuals who live alone and need daily contact. Minimum age: 55.
Summit Consumer Peer Support: Volunteers needed weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. for a minimum of two hours a day or six hours per week to provide administrative assistance. Minimum age: 25.
Williard Food Pantry: Volunteers needed 9 to 11 a.m. the second Monday of each month to assist with food pickup and unloading. Minimum age: 18, 16 with parent permission.
