The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area nonprofits and other organizations required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation.
For details about these and other volunteer opportunities, contact the Volunteer Center, 90 N. Prospect St., Akron, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at 330-762-7601, ext. 5512, or at http://www.uwsummit.org.
Akron Art Museum: Volunteers needed 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Fridays through Sundays and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays to assist in museum gift shop. Minimum age: 18.
Akron Children's Hospital: Volunteers needed July 18 and 19 to assist with the fourth annual National Hamburger Festival at Lock 3. Minimum age: 18.
Akron General Medical Center (Akron General Health System): Volunteers needed 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays to transport patients and visitors via wheelchair. Minimum age: 18.
Akron Public Schools/Akron Zoo: Volunteers needed between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Aug. 11 and/or Aug. 12 to assist with the Back to School at the Zoo event. Volunteer shifts are available. Minimum age: 18.
Akron Recreation Bureau: Volunteers needed between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. July 23-25 and 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. July 26 to assist with the Akron Arts Expo. Minimum age: 17, 15 with adult supervision.
Ardmore Inc.: Volunteers needed 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays to help adult mentally challenged clients take part in activities such as puzzles, playing pool, shooting hoops, reading, computers, gardening and arts and crafts. Minimum age: 18, 12 with adult supervision.
Area Agency on Aging: Volunteer Ombudsmen needed to visit nursing home residents as a resident's rights advocate. The next 12-hour training session begins July 7. Minimum age: 18.
Big Brothers & Sisters of Summit and Medina Counties: Male mentors needed for boys, ages 7-15. One-year commitment. Minimum age: 18.
Boys and Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve: Volunteers needed weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to assist with summer youth program. Minimum age: 16.
CASA/GAL Program of Summit County: Volunteer Child Advocates needed to independently investigate and monitor cases of abuse, neglect and/or dependency. Next 30-hour training begins July 20. Registration deadline is July 13. Two-year commitment. Minimum age: 21.
Cascade Locks Park Association: Volunteers needed between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.July 18 to assist with the Rubber Duck Derby event. Minimum age: 16, 14 with adult supervision.
Christian Fellowship Basketball League: Volunteers needed Monday and Thursday evenings to help coach boys and girls basketball. Minimum age: 20, 15 with adult supervision.
Edwin Shaw Rehab (Akron General Health System): Volunteers needed to collect fees for driving range and golf course, answer phones and fill golf ball buckets. Minimum age: 18, 15 with adult supervision.
Faith in Action Interfaith Caregivers: Volunteers wanted to assist with providing transportation, friendly visits, telephone reassurance and respite care for older adults. Minimum age: 16.
Goodwill Industries of Akron: Volunteers needed daily to assist with loading and unloading of merchandise for retail stores. Minimum age: 18.
Hattie Larlham Supported Living: Volunteers are needed 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 11 to assist with a room makeover (paint and lay nonadhesive carpet squares) for a developmentally disabled individual. Must be able to paint; all materials will be provided. Groups/families no larger than six welcome. Minimum age: 16, 14 with adult supervision.
Info Line Inc.: Volunteer emergency food specialists needed weekdays between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. for a minimum of two hours a week/eight hours a month to answer calls from individuals in the community seeking assistance. Minimum age: 18.
Neighborhood Conservation Services of Barberton: Volunteers needed to help paint homes of elderly/disabled residents for annual Paint Your Heart Out event on July 25. Minimum age: 13, younger with direct adult supervision.
Stewart's Caring Place: Volunteers needed 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays to answer phones, welcome and direct visitors, gather information and give tours. Minimum age: 16.
Summa's Palliative Care and Hospice Services: Volunteers needed to provide respite care (eight to 16 hours per month) and companion visiting (four hours per month) to patients and their families. Minimum age: 18.
YMCA-Voris Community Learning Center: Volunteer leaders, instructors and assistants needed 6-8 p.m. weekdays for a variety of programs. Minimum age: 18, 16 with adult supervision.
